Let me start off by saying I pushed the sport a bit too hard on my boy. When he was 4 I bought him a bb gun for Christmas. When we'd go out, I'd set up the fun targets like pop cans and clay pigeons- something reactive. I encouraged him and made sure it was "light" no pressure shooting. Just fun (and safe).
Every Christmas after, I upgraded him in guns. Better bb gun. Then 22lr. Then a better 22lr, keeping our range sessions light. No drill sargeant tactics.
This past Christmas (8 years old) I asked him what he wanted for Christmas and he said "I dont know. Just not another gun". Ouch. So I picked him up a ps4 and Call of Duty: WW2. Then a week later he had a sleepover with a few pals from school and the dad where he was having a sleepover at popped in Saving Private Ryan for the boys. Now he's taken an interest in shooting- specifically WW2 era firearms.
He was playing Call of Duty WW2 and I said "Ya know, I have a few of these guns" he says "do you have an m1 carbine!?". I said yes I do. "Can we shoot it!?" Yes we can. His eyes lit up and he was nailing targets and enjoying shooting for once.
Now he says his favorite gun of all time is the MP-40 followed by the m1 carbine. I can't afford an MP-40 and the co2 replica I seen was like $275 with terrible reviews.
Sorry for dragging this out but is there some WW2 era firearm replicas people can suggest? He's into the mp-40 and m1 carbine. He shrugged off my Garand like it was garbage. So I'd like to stick to those two so I dont re disencourage him.
I thought. Thought. I seen a guy turn a Marlin model 60 into a m1 carbine look a like. Anyone do this? I think it was just peeps and different furniture?
The mp-40 route won't happen unless it's 22lr. No more bb guns. Or it could be in 9mm semi auto. I'd imagine the latter would be expensive.
I showed him the RIA 22lr AK and Mossbergs (I believe Mossbergs) 22lr AR style rifle and his response was "those are fricken ugly".
So. WW2 replica suggestions. No BB guns. No handguns (he doesn't like them...yet). Mp-40 or M1 carbine replica would be prime. Budget is under $400. I have a model 60 I'd love to make look like the m1 carbine. I can't remember what the guy did other than peeps and furniture. I can't imagine he ditched the tube and rigged up a mag fed system.
I wouldn't mind him shooting my m1 carbine but the ammo is getting pretty dang high in price and I'm not going to start reloading yet another cartridge.
Any ideas or suggestions?
