has anyone used the x die I believe its rcbs or redding and suppose to eliminate trimming of the cases? If so does it work? I'm thinking of 223 plinking ammo the mini 14 its them quick. Pistol has been the only ammo I've made so far.

There has been a lot of information posted here on the RCBS X-Die you can search or just read this last thread here.

I don't use an X die but I think the best way to limit case stretch is to properly set the sizer die, going down just far enough to move the shoulder enough to allow the case to chamber snugly. Adjusting a FL die the way the factory instructions say to do it will almost invariably go too far and produces excessive headspace, that allows the case to stretch more than it needs to.

Gentlemen:

If either of you would use an X-Die you would know that the cases do not stretch. Majority of the case stretching is caused by the extraction of the decapping/neck sizing mandrel. I have been using the X-Die for nearly eight years and haven't had to re-trim any of my brass resized with it nor have I been having any neck splits; some of my brass has been loaded 10-15 times so far with no issue. IMO that's the proof in the pudding that the X-Die limits overall stretch and improves brass life.

Idano,

I do use X-Dies, have so since their introduction, and what you say is correct. When I stated +1 for what ranger335v says, I was referring to his statement about adjusting FL dies according to instructions. Doing so does, or can cause excessive headspace. You are absolutely correct that the majority of case stretching is caused by the extraction of the decapping/neck sizing mandrel. However, incorrect headspace from improperly adjusted FL dies can contribute to stretching.

+1 on Xdies. They work great. I hate trimming brass so any chance to reduce that amount of effort is very nice. It is more work at the start, but in the long run it saves time. I just need to get another set for my 243.
