which would you suggest? im looking at a xd compact or subcompact for ccw.
i love the way the 9mm i already own shoot, the always feel like such smooth shots and have almost non existant recoil. i own a .40 glock 22 but i feel that the .40 recoil has too much snap and makes it far less enjoyable and accurate for me to shoot.

ive never shot a .45 acp but i know that most people suggest that for ccw over a 9mm. what do you guys think? how is the recoil compared to a .40 or a 9mm?

I have an XD in .45 and I find the recoil to be much softer than the .40 Glock 22. It's very accurate as well and the only drawback at the moment is the cost of .45 ammo relative to either .40 or 9mm.

Guess you're going to have let size be one of your big/main deciding factors?
Normally, I weigh caliber vs round count, but the XDSC9 and XD45 carry the same number of rounds iff'n I remember correctly?

I have an XDSC9 and XDSC40-the 9 replaced the 40 as my main CCW when they redesigned the 9mm magazines-upped the count from 10 to 13 in the short mag (also thought the 9 would have much less muzzle flip than the 40). The long mag holds 16 9mm.

Haven't shot an XD45 (but have shot plenty of 45es)-conventional wisdom says 45 is more of a push than the 40 snap.

BTW-you do know there is an XD45 compact? Same dimensions as the 45, but the grip is 'bout 1/2"? shorter. The XD45C fits me better (I hate extra mag hanging below the meat of my hand), and you do have the option of the short mag/long mag with the XD45C-the XD45 takes the regular mag (1 size only)?

The XD45C has been on my short list for way too long.

I've tended to move down in caliber over the years as SD ammo has improved.
I don't know that there's all that much difference in 45 vs 9 in SD ammo these days, and you have to weigh in the possible extra rounds of 9mm you can carry if that applies to your choices.

welcome to thr. i had a .40 sc an atually it was very accurate and the recoil wasn't bad at all considering the short sight radius, barrel lenght and light weight of the gun. however you have 9mm's and you like them and i think that you would be very happy with the 9mm xd sc. if i was gonna get another xd sc i would go with the 9mm. now they have 13+1 in a flush fitting magazine and that is pretty darn good in my book.

thanks for the welcome guys and the responses.

after doing some research i think i have decided to go the 9mm route, i looked at examples of real wounds and ballistic wound testing and 9mm (hollow point atleast) seems to be just as effective.

but i do believe once i get my reloading stuff set up i will look harder into a .45

btw how would you compare the ease of carry of a xd sub compact to a 1911 (full size single stack)

I have an XD40SC and love it. There is a show called "Handguns" on the Sportsman channel, and they have been running a series of tests designed to destroy an XDm9. So far they haven't been able to phase it. Great gun.:D

Looks like I'm the third guy here with an XD40 SC. Great shooting gun for a SC. Would I want to shoot it for 25 yard target competitions? No. At likely self-defense distances can I put a double-tap in a 4" circle? Yes.

I'm not about to start a "Which caliber is better for SD" argument but I've generally subscribed to the "bigger is better" school of thought. With that said, weight is definitely a consideration when carrying a concealed weapon all day long.

One can also make a case for simplifying one's ammo purchases to a single caliber.

Net/net, I wouldn't dismiss the XD40 SC out of hand just because it's a .40 caliber. You might want to rent one at a local range if you can.

I have the XDC in .45 which is the same width as the 9mm and it is a great, albeit somewhat thick compared to a 1911, concealment weapon. That said, nothing wrong with 9mm and ammo is almost always more available and cheaper. I would worry less about the optimum caliber and go with what you shoot confidently and can shoot/practice with more often.

The XD is the one handgun that leaves the slide the same thickness from the 9mm to the 45.

The ONLY reason I'll ever go lower than 45 is for size of the gun itself. I have a XD 45C. If you are content on carrying that IWB concealed, go for it. However, for me, I love the gun, but it can not go IWB because of thickness. Anyhow, if you are not going to shred some ounces going with a smaller caliber, why not get a .45?

The recoil isn't really that much more than a 9mm, and when you hear all of the ".45 pushes, .40 snaps" hooplah....well, it's true. .45 or 9mm, skip the .40 unless that's the biggest caliber that particular company offers.

Oh dear...who has this guy been talking to? Haha...I'll take the extra 8 rounds in a 9mm mag any day over the "one shot miracle stopping power" of the overpriced .45.

I've owned the XD 9SC, and currently have an XD45 Service, and just won a bid on a XD40SC. The 9mm sc was accurate, recoil very mild, but I couldn't warm to it. I prefer 40 and 45s, and believe the XD40SC will meet my expectations. The XD45 service is my HD bedside gun. I have other 40s, but I really like the XD platform with the grip safety, especially since I also own 1911s. I was looking for a truck gun and this XD40sc will work well, since its fairly compact and I won't worry about marring or dirtying the finish, especially for the price I paid. Many of my guns are just too nice to subject to dusty back road trucking.

What's most important is what works for you, be it 9mm, 40SW or 45. Recoil for 45 in an XD is quite pleasant, a bit more than the 9mm, but its a different kind of recoil, more of a push than a snap.
