First, I'd focus on Civil and Revolutionary War working quality (or the best quality I could find) antiques. One of every major rifle and pistol used in each war. Then I'd get good-quality working replicas of the best and learn to shoot black powder.

Next I'd get high-quality examples of every firearm used by every side in WWII. And lots of ammo.

An AR-15 and Colt GI 1911 for my son.

A black-powder lever action in .45-70 for an old friend.

A Thompson SMG for my business partner.

And that would leave me about a half mil to give to the Nature Conservancy.

I don't want to live in the country. I've got my 10 acres at the ocean and I can shoot there whenever I'm willing to spend the three hours to get there. I'd probably do a lot more of that, but I really like living in the suburbs. I don't want all that many more guns, certainly not $1M worth; but an underground range right in the house, now that would be nice, and that's sort of like spending it on guns.

FASCINATING REPLIES, FOLKS!!!

Of all your replies so far, most interesting to me is something I overlooked in the poll questions - unless you consider it as "other." That is to build an indoor range for your home. Also, to build a really good Gun Room - read: VAULT. This room would be similar to a huge bank vault, only homey and comfortable, not sterile.

I'd search for the finest of security systems and be able to watch any perimeter around my abode at ANY time, day or night. By the way, there is no way I would live in an isolated area. I would live pretty much the way I do now in a quiet area with good shopping, police, fire, hospitals, etc. nearby.

Every weird, oddball, unusual, ugly, scarce old gun that came within my grasp would join the collection. Might have a couple of old, fully engraved Colt SAA in .45LC, just for nostalgia not shooting.

Class III items in my collection would only be a nice wartime Thompson M1A1 and a minty Schmeisser MP40 (preferably with the double mag setup). One of those old Mauser selective-fire broomhandles would be nice to own too.

The neat thing about all this dreaming we're doing here is the fact that IT COULD HAPPEN... YOU MIGHT WIN THE NEXT BIG LOTTERY YOU ENTER. Then, if you have time, you can post here in HR Forums what it was like to live the dream. GOOD LUCK!

As long as we are dreaming......at least one mini-gun like Arnold (CA gov, that Arnold) used in Terminator, with the rest spent in buying old US historically significant weapons in pistols, shotguns and long guns. With the price going up all the time, might be able to get a dozen or two :D .

Stuff that. If I won a huge lottery I'd build a range capable of hosting the IPSC Nationals. Then I'd look at buying guns with the spare change.

Or one like the one Jesse (MN Gov. , that Jesse) used in Predator. Say, isn't that interesting; Use a mini-gun in a movie, become Governor of your State.:)

I suppose I should start buying tickets now, eh?
