If you had to purchase a 5.56mm military-type carbine as a substitute for an M4-type carbine, which would it be? Assume the gun would be used for serious business, i.e. SHTF, home defense, and/or carbine classes.

I wouldn't buy a 5.56 in anything other rhan an AR15 but that's just me. If I couldn't have an AR I would get a nice AK in 7.62x39 or a M1A1 in .308. Sorry but to me there is no suitable substitute in 5.56 for a nice AR.

Microtech MSAR STG-556. Preferably the version that accepts STANAG magazines.

I gotta admit, I do like my ARs

I could grab the Golani or MSAR E4

If not one of those...I was all high on the ACR...until BM made it gain weight, priced it outrageously and lost compatibility with AR barrels and trigger groups.

Frankly, the RobArms XCR is starting to look good. The things I don't like about the AR (mainly, lack of folding capability, crappy charging handle) are solved and it is also a piston gun...although I have no problem with DI guns.

Golani, Galil, Saiga if price is a concern (price may still be a concern with the first two...not sure). If price isn't a concern, That new Benelli, AUG, FS2000, SCAR, XCR, something along those lines may float your boat.

Personally, I think that Benelli or the XCR with a 20" barrel would be sweet. To keep OAL down though, I'd have to take a page from Maverick's playbook and suggest a bullpup. FS2000 is a good looker, and fully ambidextrious without swapping any parts.

Well, theres the Sig 556, the Ruger SR 556, the AUG clones, the FN SCAR, the FN fs2000, the XCR, the ACR if it's ever actually on the market, AK clones in 5.56, HK-neutered G36, HK-33 copies, Galil Golani sporters, the Beneli MR1, the Ruger mini-14.

Of course, their all just trying to take the AR-15's place.

The Daewoo K2

The "new" Mini-14s are much better than the old ones.. A lot of that choice will revolve around budget - more bucks, more choices. The SIGs are very nice as well. ;)

An FS2000 or Sig 556. Or XCR. Or Saiga. Actually, there are a lot of choices. But an FS2000 is at the top.

I've always thought the FS2000 looked like an awesome gun. I've never fired it but I have picked it up before and found the ergonomics to be very much to my liking. It is expensive but nonetheless impressive....have heard no complaints about reliability. How is the trigger? I have fired the MSAR STG-556 and the one thing that irked me on the gun was the awkward trigger that I hear is a problem of bullpups in general.

I like my ARs but my Daewoo K2 is nice.
I wouldn't argue if someone said the K2 is a better rifle than the AR.
