Your first purchased handgun and why

My first handgun was an H&R Model 999 .22 revolver, 6" top-break w/ adj. sights, used.

Cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, much more accurate than I was at the time.

My first purchased handgun was a Colt Government Model Series 70 1911A1 5"
in .45 ACP. Why? Because I had been issured a 1911 during my time in the military and I was intimately familiar with the weapon. It also happens to be a very good handgun.

Colt 1917 New Service Army

Why? Already had a .22, already had a Colt .45 auto as a graduation present.

Had read an article in Shooter's Bible about the SW version of the 1917, which perked my interest in these old big bores.

Paid $275 for it (not including tax, bkgrd check etc.)

My first handgun was a .357 mag Ruger Security-Six.

The reason I got it was that I got the holy crap beat out of me on Oahu by two Polynesians. I had a friend who was a military cop and he kind of put the thought into my head. So when I got back to Utah, I sold a telescope I dearly loved and bought the Ruger. I soon found I didn't have enough money to shoot it at the time, so I got me a $68 RG single-action .22LR.

Years later, I was almost mugged again, but I had a Rossi M88 in my overcoat pocket. This was in D.C. in an underground garage. I had a date and an illegal gun in my pocket, but was lucky and didn't have to shoot anyone. Now the penalties in D.C. are so draconian that I durst not carry a pistol. So I stay out of D.C. now and stick around Virginia.

Browning Buckmark Camper. Pretty simple really, it was inexpensive, I had no intention of carrying because I wasn't 21, and I could shoot all day for less than the cost of a movie.

First purchased handgun

I hadn't shot much as an adult. Did shoot quite a bit as a kid/teenager. I decided I missed plinking and wanted to have something around the house for protection. Checked things out for a while and decided to get a Taurus 445 stainless 2" snubby in 44 special. Not exactly a plinker though. Now I have gotten into cowboy shooting and shot a steel challenge match with my Springfield 1911. Next I will probably get a Ruger 22/45 for steel challenge. This is my first post here.

Ruger Security Six in stainless.

Lesson learned: don't sell your Ruger Security Six to finance another gun.

Shear_stress. Amen. Did that twice.

First handgun I bought was in San Francisco in 1972 after coming back from Vietnam. I didn't know much, just that I wanted a hand gun. I got it from a shop in downtown San Francisco. What I settled on was a Ruger Blackhawk .357mag/9mm SA revolver. I just wanted something to plink and target shoot with. I had imagined that SA revolvers were safer and easier to load.

The one I had had a hair trigger and had screws that kept loosening up and falling out when I shot it. Loctite fixed the screw problem. It was a bad choice for a first handgun. Uncomfortable grip, recoil. Loud back in the day before ear protection was de rigeur. Expensive to shoot before I started reloading. I can't believe I used to throw away brass. I kept it for about a year and half and replaced it with a BHP and a P-38.

Ruger Single-Six in 22lr/22mag. Great gun at a great price and I wish I still had it today. I bought another one to replace it and sold that one too. Currently looking for another one to replace them both. Any clue what I'm slowly learning? :banghead: Quit getting rid of guns you like!!!

My first was as Ruger P944D .40S&W. I chose this model because of it's safety features. DA/SA w/decocker. Perfect first pistol IMO. I learned all the basics on that gun and it pretty much set the standard of what I judge other guns by. By no means is the P944D the perfect pistol, but what it has that is good, is really good. After owning it, I learned what I wanted from my weapons. I found the XD45 to fit me better, but it lacked safety features. I bought it anyway because I am more confident in my handling abilities now. I think the ruger P94 series is great in any caliber, and an excellent starter pistol.

Ruger P95. Why? Because I liked it and the price was right. Unfortunately for me the price was right only after I traded a Remington '03A3 and some cash to boot.:barf: In my defense I was gun-dumb at the time and there was no HighRoad to consult before getting screwed.
First wheel gun was a 6" GP100.
Still have the GP, the P95's been gone a long time. It was a good gun but after I got a taste of 45acp I didn't need a 9mm anymore. :p

My first handgun was a Glock 22 because they are dead reliable and just plain great. The reason I got it was because I had recently finished my Eagle project and it was a gift from my father for finishing.

S&W Model 617 .22LR

Being my first handgun I wanted a .22 while I sorted things out.

8 or 9 handguns later (and one WASR10) I STILL haven't sorted out what I want.

But it has (and still is) fun in all its flavours :D

My first was a Erma KGP68A 380 auto, (a sweet little 3/4 scale Luger toggle design) it was priced right, $150 at a pawn shop in Killeen Texas. I traded it off for something when I moved back to Indiana. :banghead:

Woah, let me back up a few years. Just out of high school I bought a Clerke 1st .22 revolver from a buddy for $5.00.
Still have it, made a bookend out of it because it wasn't worth putting good ammo in. After all these years I still feel like I got ripped off. Does make a nice bookend though.

My first purchase was Just 4 months ago. It was a GLOCK 23. It was the gun I rented When I took my first gun safety class.

why....this is probably the worst reason to actually but a gun but...at the end of the gun safety class we got an hour on the range, and at 7 yrd I coldnt even hit the target half of the time and (my first time shooting), but I love challenges. The instructor suggested i start out w/a smaller caliber and work my way up. I bought the gun just to prove to myself that I could learn to shot THAT gun and shoot it accuratley w/o having to work my way up from a 22lr. 4 mnths later and i can shoot 4 leaf clovers at 7 yrds.

First purchase:

Glock 36.
I already had a .22 and a .45 Long Colt for plinking and hunting and was looking for a CHL gun. I still pack it often. Big bullet, thin package, enough rounds, reliable and durable. Not too much $$ either.
Then it was a S&W 637 for the wife and her CHL, then a G17, then a....well y'all know how that goes.

My first was a Ruger Single six .22/.22WMR. 7 1/2 inch barrel. It was inexpensive and fit my college-boy budget. Cheap to shoot as much as I wanted. With the Magnum cylinder it was my car and camping SD gun. Sold it 20-some ya, wish I still had it. Fun little gun.

My wife's first was a .22 S&W Kit gun w/ 4 inch barrel. It was her purse gun for many years.

My first was a Glock 22, purchased used w/one standard capacity magazine at a gun show in St. Paul, MN, about three years and three months ago.

I'd wanted to own a gun for a long time, wanted to get my CCW permit, wanted to learn to shoot a handgun. However, the real reason I selected a
.40 Glock was kind of esoteric.

I had written a mystery novel in which my Private Investigator character carried a Glock in .40, and I wanted one of my own so I could learn how it handled, what it was like to shoot it, etc.

Now I own about a dozen guns, with no sign of things slowing down.

Four inch nickle plated Colt Trooper MKIII, .357 mag back in 1978. Why? because it was a Colt, it was a .357mag and well................cause it was pretty.
