OK, Hello all..brand new member here. Cut to the chase....anybody taken their 59/66 yugo sks and bobbed teh barrel just west of the grenade launcher sight paperweight?

I wanted to have a smith do the job right, crown the barrel, and install a russian/combloc-style front sight on the resultant short barrel.

waddya think?

please don't reply with comments about why this would be a bad idea. I've got no hesitation modifying a dime-a-dozen yugo sks. Several variants are in my collection, so I feel ready to experiment......I am more interested in whether anyone has before/after pics of such a job, or recommendations.

thanks!

That Yugo. stock is going to be heavy...if looking to make it a bit shorter and lighter, might think about gettingand fitting a cheap China-crap-wood stock....are considerably lighter and could reverse the change anytime you wanted.

Can chop on yourown gun to your heart's content...are right, are plenty of Yugos. and if there is going to be a major collectors surge, it's going to be way down the road...and some of them are so beat up and ugly, I doubt they'd generate much interrest over the good grade rifles that are out there.

Go to agree...chances of launching grenades seem pretty slim.

I think it you chop it right behind the GL in'll work fine. I did read of someone who shortened his SKS up more than that (don't think it was a Yugo, but same should apply), and he had to open up the gas hole to get it to cycle properly.

Why don't you just buy....

a Chinese SKS. They are configured like you want and you won't have to bubba your Yugo. After you do the bubba custom on your Yugo, I doubt if it will shoot as well as it does in the original military configuration........chris3

The Yugo, not having a chrome lined barrel, is a perfect candidate to have the barrel shortened. For me, I never understood the attraction of shorter barrels though. You lose valuable sight radius and velocity and the gun is still long and heavy. I have a Chinese 16 incher and it's about the same as the other SKS as far as handling. Sounds like an interesting project though. Take pics if you can. :)

Shortened one for a friend.
Took off the launcher.
Pulled the pins and removed the front sight assembly.
Cut the assembly behind and in front of the sight base itself and cut off the bayonet lugs. I left the original two pin holes in the sight base and put it in the original position; you could drive the base further back and drill new grooves in the barrel.
Cut the barrel off about 1/4" in front of the sight , squared and crowned it.

Made a big difference in weight and balance, no functioning problems.
