We just elected an anti-gun leftist government in Canada.

So I went out and bought this. :neener:

We cannot import handguns with barrels shorter than 4.2" nor .25 nor .32 nor .380s anymore into Canada so getting a small pistol means older ones already in Canada.

It's for target shooting of course.

I know that these AMT Backup .380s have a reputation for jamming but I'll clean it well, apply a good grease to the rails and if necessary will polish the feed ramp, change the recoil and mag springs and will run a variety of ammo through it to see what/if any it likes.

I have that exact model. Given it has a trigger only King Kong could love, it has never been a "target" type gun. At best, it was a last ditch belly gun.

But, it's always run fine. Maybe I was just lucky but once I got the trigger pulled it went bang every time.

One small step for a Canadian. A giant leap for British subjects. :neener:

Nice looking little gun. Congrats.

We suspect that our new government will start banning and confiscating some types of firearms. Maybe give municipalities the right to ban firearms etc.

But we will fight for our rights even though our Charter of Rights does not guarantee us the rights to our property.

Guard your rights my American brothers and be grateful for your Constitution.

RCMP buddy of mine in BC had kept me advised as to progress in gun freedoms expanding in Canada. Sorry to see the backslide!
Dan

Yeah, sorry to read this, geologist. We seem to have a similar struggle here in the US with occasionally electing leftist leaders, too. Here's to hoping you can get a better grip on the freedoms you deserve. It's a never-ending fight.

Glad you could get your hands on something before it gets crushed or shredded. Be sure to give us a range report when you can.

1st... I wish our northern brother and sisters the best of luck.

2nd... what the reasoning behind no more .25, .32 and .380s???

Lol.. 3rd... I think your new guy beats Putin In the Shirtless Politician contest. :p

Death by a thousand cuts. On the surface they said it was to make the public safer from street guns but the reality is that along with the under 4.2" barrels, they made up close to 40% of the handguns in our handgun registry (in effect since 1934 and still in effect).

By making them prohibited it was in fact a long term confiscation of 40% of the handguns in Canada at that time WITHOUT monetary compensation.

Lesson to learn is this, gun registries are about confiscation and nothing more. You can't steal something unless you know where the goodies are.

Ya, my State wanted to limit magazines, enact universal background checks, etc. Instead we decided to FREEDOM harder, and now we got rid of the permit requirement to carry concealed handguns in public. :D

(See what I did there? When you use Freedom as a verb it fills you with the spirit of John Moses Browning and enables you to pull up your pants and get the job done!) :)

I had a couple of AMT Back Ups years ago. They worked but the trigger pull was so heavy and gritty it didn't really matter that there weren't any real sights to use to get it on target. On the plus side it was stainless so I didn't worry about the finish and it's size was perfect for pocket carry. When the Colt Mustang came out I sold the Back Up and used the money to get one.

I've ordered new Wolff springs (recoil, trigger, mag).

Will replacing the trigger spring with the Wolff make a difference?

After all in Canada it is a 7 yard target pistol to go along with my Astra Constable .380 target pistol.............

Thanks for answering. I understand their reasoning for attacking those calibers now.

Sooo.... somehow they convinced a bunch of people that there is logic in ' small caliber street guns are more dangerous than large caliber street guns'.

Its amazing how many people stop thinking for themselves when they hear a politician speak. (that goes for the USA too)

"...so getting a small pistol means older ones already in Canada..." Nope. Means you had to have one prior to 1 Dec., 1998. Nothing to do with Junior.
And 105mm is 4.1". .380s are not banned either. Problem is their evil short barrels.
"...the reasoning..." At the time, it was sold as them being the firearm of choice for criminals. Absolute BS, of course. A criminal would be caught dead with a small pistol of any calibre.

But the small pistols that you can buy in Canada are only the older ones that were already in Canada when the "prohibition" came into effect.

What is the status of your gun registry in Canada anyway?

I thought they deleted it all except the Quebec records. Is that correct?

geologist - almost 40 years ago, my first gun larger than a .22 was an Astra Constable in .380.
Still have it, and reload for it too.
:D

Our non-restricted Long Gun Registry was abolished over a year ago and the Quebec data after a Supreme Court challenge was recently deleted as well. In theory.........

The restricted Handgun and AR rifle registry is still in effect and has been since 1936.

OP, I have had your attitude about Canada for many years. Had planned to hunt there years ago...when the essential gun ban happened...cancelled those plans an vowed to never spend my money hunting in Canada. If they dislike guns so much, they will never make a dime off me using mine there.

That's a new antis angle for me. I suspect that that if the antis ever get a simiauto rifle ban, magazine ban, and CA and MA type restrictions on pistols, the push to ban small evil handguns (just like SBRs) will be next after after, go figure, the latter fails to do anything to stop criminals.

"Common sense" gun control is a constantly moving goal post that won't stop until guns are banned.

Are you saying there was a time they did otherwise?
At lest you get to keep that neat ZKK 602. Right?
