My Detroit Gun Rights Examiner article on the latest laughably bad article from CBS News. This one isn't as bad as the Rolling Stone Magazine article on "The 5 Most Dangerous Guns" but it shows similar ignorance and sloppy reporting.

CBS News displays media ignorance in story on 'Most Heavily Armed States in America'

"In a photo story published on their website CBS News once again displays both complete ignorance of firearms related topics and an absence of basic journalism skills.

In the undated photo-story, "The Most Heavily Armed States in America" CBS attempts to look at "...gun laws and the nation's pervasive firearms culture" by listing what they believe are the 30 states with the highest rates of firearms ownership.

The photo-story states, "Here is a look at the 30 states with the most guns per capita, according to the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census Bureau."

I looked at the CBS article and sort of shook my head. The first thing that hit me was use of the word "registered". NCIS is not real life. There are very few "registered" firearms in the US. All of the NFA stuff is registered. According to their list, those 30 states account for 2.6 million guns. Where are all the guns?

Hmm, when were the last mass shootings in Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, Tennessee or Montana?

These are the states with the most guns according to them.

I have long suspected that the largest national news media corporations very intentionally hide behind the "oops, we made a little mistake in our facts" excuse.

Good article, well written.

Yes, it is almost incomprehensible that they would screw up that badly with it being relatively common knowledge that there are nearly as many firearms as there are people in the United states. I've not see an estimate by a halfway credible source that puts the figure any lower than 250 million in a long time.

"My state comes in at #4 on the list. I have no idea where they came up with these numbers. Thin air would be my guess."

If you read my article you'd know the answer.

Heck, I'll give it to you. They looked at the ATF registry of all NFA weapons (MG's, SBR's, AOW's, etc) and somehow thought that it was a registration database of ALL firearms in the U.S.

Pretty amazingly stupid

It said that my state, Alabama, had 20 guns per 1000 people! That must be way off. I am certain that there are far more guns per 1000 people than just 20!?. I alone own about 14 or so guns and that's really not a lot.

I wanted to drill them a new one, but couldn't find a way to contact them.

The author is a total fail. I am really p***** that he puts us at 22.

I think I'll go buy another gun. :cuss:

If you look carefully it is based on "Registered Guns." Not sure what that means, but at least in Texas, there is no such thing. So his data is very much flawed.

But hey I think I will buy a new gun too. It can't hurt.
