Went to the Tahoe national forest today to do a lil shooting and scrounge some brass. Left with a five gallon bucket full and a brown paper groceries bag near full.
Must have picked up 200 live rounds.
in addition to the countless common calibers. About 100 50 bewolf 50+ 30/40 krag 500 300acc 44,357,45colt 45/70 hundreds of 308,30/06,270, 7.62x54r 35rem and thousends of 223,9,45,38,40, I have picked up lots in the past but nothing like this i had to walk away from tons more cause it got dark.
This just confirms how good the economy in California really is.,

Brown paper grocery bag full of brass? How would you move such a thing? I would expect the weight of the brass would be far more than the bag could handle.

HA around here we will have to wait for the snow and icebergs to melt before we can prospect for brass.:D The spring thaw usually is a good brass time. Cant wait -----I am Green with envy.

Where do you even get brown paper grocery bags anymore?

They're trying to outlaw plastic bags around here so instead CA goes backwards in time to clear cut forests to make paper bags:neener:

Nice score on the brass OP.

The club I now belong to doesn't seem to have any reloaders so there is brass everywhere. I alway come home with way more than I shoot. I try to pick calibers I load and anything else goes to the scrap can.

Nice score for you but what's that say about the average California shooter? Leaving their trash in the forests. And they wonder why......
smh.

Very nice!

Best brass score I've had was a bunch of 9mm, 40 S&W, and 223 at a police range where they were letting us hold a BSA turkey shoot. No turkey's were harmed during the event., unfortunately. No scouts were either, thankfully. I asked the rep from the city if I could collect the brass and he said I could have as much as I could carry, but I couldn't bag it up or use boxes. I filled up every pocket I had. When that started to run out, I put zip-ties on the ends of my coat sleeves and filled those up too. It ended up being about 3 gallons worth of brass.

Yep way to much money and no common sense here in California.
The place was a mess I feel embarrassed to be a shooter their.
In addition to the brass picked up gathered up a small mountain Of trash and had a big ol fire. Was in my lil jeep so couldent haul much out.
And the bag..... A plastic bag from sportsman warehouse lined the paper bag then a smaller paper bag on that. Looks to be about 150 lb two tumblers humming away as im going to bed, lot of brass

somebody left 44 brass on the ground?! I've heard rumors of that, but never actually seen it before........... I always figured it was a myth like the unicorn or a balanced federal budget.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no reason to leave any brass on the ground. What you don't use or sell you can take to a scrap metal dealer for cash. I think of it like nickles or dimes laying on the ground, or quarters for rifle brass. You'd pick up hundreds of them, wouldn't you?

Of course scrap metal prices for brass are HALF what they were 2 years ago. I used to get $2.33/pound for cartridge cases. Now the same place is paying only $1.17/pound. At that price, 9's and 40's are only worth a penny as scrap.

For scrap brass that is not a cartridge case they are paying only 69 cents/pound! Used to be $2.00 two years ago. I heard it's because China's economy is down so they aren't buying it.

Remember a couple years ago when all the ammo companies raised their prices because of the cost of brass? Hasn't come down now has it? I assume profits are way up at the ammo companies. Thank God I reload.

I shot for decades without caring what happened to my brass. It is only since I started reloading that I have even paid attention...and, like the OP, now I take home more brass than I shoot almost every time I go to the range.

Nice score.
I would pull the live rounds for sure though. Never know if some sick person loaded a bad round of purpose and left it laying around for someone to pick up and shoot.

If you want to nit pick it was kind of rude for the people to leave the brass laying around in the National Forest. Reloaders see it and think score, others see it and think trash, or worse with live rounds dangerous stuff. (anti gun thinking)

Glad you cleaned up after them.

The sorting tumbling sifting is quite the job. At nite I tumble with a timer before I go to work same and once I get home two batches with two tumblers should have it done some time this weekend. The amount of .223/5.56 is amazing also still in disbelief 39 50:A.E. 12 45/70 Dozen 300 win mag 60 7mm rem mag the list goes on. I guess its a California thing.
If I had time I really think I could have doubled the amount. That was one day of picking up while shooting clean up six or so hr

I never based a score even close to that. Good for you! Now that Fish and Game is requiring all shooters to police their empty cases before leaving the range brass is rare where I am.
