I live in Illinois and have someone who lives in Wisconsin interested in buying one of my guns. I know I can have my FFL ship it to his FFL, but the cost of the FFL and shipping fees are enough where I'm not sure it's worth it for either of us. Are there any other options, such as using only an FFL in either state? I'd be willing to make the drive into Wisconsin to drop it off at his FFL.

You didn't mention what type of firearm it is, and that makes a difference in what options you have.

You can send it directly to an FFL in his state, you're not required to send it FFL to FFL. The shipping method rules would depend on what type of firearm it is.

An FFL must be involved in the sale, but where that FFL is required to be located depends on what type of firearm it is.

It doesn't matter what kind of firearm it is if you're intending to drive to Wisconsin and drop it off at his FFL (unless it's an NFA firearm). But the problem you might run into is that lots of FFL employees don't seem to realize that interstate private transfers require an FFL to be involved, so they may tell you to just do a face-to-face transfer, which would be a felony.

That would be up to the FFL doing the transfer. While it would be legal, some FFLs won't accept a gun for transfer on a walk-in. And some won't accept one unless shipped by an FFL, although legally it doesn't need to be.

The business policies of FFLs can vary. The seller and buyer need to work out the details with the FFL ahead of time and do things the way the FFL wants to do things. If that doesn't work for the seller or buyer they need to find a more accommodating FFL.

It’s a Springfield XDS.Thanks for the answers. I’ll ask the buyer if he has a Wisconsin FFL we can use.
