When do you have "enough" ammo?

You have enough if you have ten years' worth of Russian Wolf etc.....IF there one day is a very high tariff put on certain imported ammo, if not an outright ban.

That could happen in California, never mind on a US-wide federal level. I can easily imagine hearing California's politicians' speeches with their phony warnings about "...cheap ammo, by the Case, to power Weapons of War among our cherished citizens!".

Right! .223 will be the new dollar bill, .30-30 a fiver, and .30-06 a Jackson.......

.500 S&W will be the new 100 dollar bill!

Figure how much you shoot per month. Multiply by 12. Guesstimate how many years you expect to be able to shoot. Multiply that by the previous number. Now take that number and multiply it by 3. If your significant other shoots too or kids, multiply by .5 for them. That will give you a good start.

Also, save all your brass. You may start reloading at some point, or you can sell us the brass to pay for more ammo.

I do an inventory every year between Thanksgiving and my birthday early in December. I have the following calibers:
22LR/Magnum 2500/1000
38Spl 1500Wadcutters, 1000 Social
357Magnum 500 Lead, 1200 Social
9MM 4000 FMJ, 2500 Social (Ranger T 127GR +P+)
40S&W 1800 FMJ, 1200 Social
45ACP 1500 FMJ, 1600 Social many varieties
223 5000 FMJ, 2000 Various HP
Enough powder, primers, brass, and bullets to reload everything except 22LR and 223 in the neighborhood of 30,000.
In addition I have 30 G-19Mags, 25 and counting 223 Magpul mags, 28 45ACP Glock Mags, 22 Single Stack 45 mags, 18 40Cal mags, 8 22LR mags.
I believe I have enough to last for longer than I will likely live which includes reloading. I go thru 12200-1500 rounds mostly reloads and FMJ per year. I shoot mostly 9MM and .223 now so the inventory of 38, 40, 45 does not shrink.

Stock pile for a rainy day, stack it deep because you like to shoot, that makes sense. Thousands of rounds for the zombie outbreak or the WROL scenario doesn't understand the concept that luck works both ways.

If everything goes sideways I'd rather have more than enough to defend the family, I'm not so quick to throw in the towel and admit defeat. Hopefully we'll never need to find out. That said a goal of 10-15,000 rounds per caliber seems like a good start, as others have said if you are out at the range enough it's easy to blow through 1000 rounds a month per caliber. If the goal is to make sure you have enough for the next year or so I would start reloading.

and IMHO IF you're really seriously concerned about the end of the world stuff, you're better off training and practicing with that ammo, than stockpiling it in a corner. I go through a little over 20K in pistol, and about 5K in rifle a year between classes, matches and practice.

Last year alone I took 3 defensive classes: 1 carbine and 2 pistol. IMHO, IF the SHTF, it's not how much ammo you've got stockpiled, it's what you've been doing with it up to that point in time that's going to matter.

I spent all I could afford last year before the election to stockpile ammo to keep away from being impacted by future shortages. Also bought a couple of new pistols to fill perceived holes in my sizes. Now I need to start buying moderate amounts of ammo monthly to keep my stock up and provide enough to cover my shooting needs. I had practically stopped shooting and need to practice again to bring back my skills.

When you croak and there's some left over.

I've got plenty of ammo for my needs. What I never seem to have enough of is brass. No matter how many 45ACP I have (and I have thousands), I pick up every empty I see on the ground at the range and treat them like gold. I guess that is just the curse of the reloader.

That's one reason I like revolvers so well. All the empties are right there in your cylinder.

This question was put to the test by my brother__what is enough? Awhile back he went to a Going-out-of-business sale at a sporting goods store. They had lots of bricks of Winchester SV Target .22lr ammo. The price was ridiculously cheap. He stopped pulling bricks off the shelf at 35; that is 17,500 rounds. So I think the acceptable quantity of ammo in your stash is dictated by price

A number of posters sentiments for "enough to pass on to the kids", yep.

If people are that worried about the Big SHTF/WROL, maybe the right gun can allow them to break into a ransacked Walgreens and find weeks' worth of pharmaceuticals which they need to survive, such as Brilinta, Atorvastatin, Carvedilol etc, or Refrigerated Insulin for my wife?
I already lived through a SHTF in late October. My .380 Makarov, AK and .303 Enfield In The Car were useless. "Wait--you're not making any sense!" "It was SHTF, you Needed a gun!!"....= O

After weeks of shortness of breath when jogging (No other indications of an artery being blocked: none at all), the Only reason I survived the 100% blocked 'Widowmaker' artery "SHTF" --despite a very healthy heart-- was by being in town, and Not on my favorite nearby wooded jogging trails, Nor on any rural road.

So.... even in a classic WROL, guns = prescription, Non-narcotic drugs such as blood thinners, anti-clot, and a type which protects a stent from your body's natural defense systems? Please tell me which ammo chambering or how many Tanker mags, stored in what type of tactical vest..
I do have five AKs, two SKS and over 13,000 rds. of ammo for them, in case of future import tariffs/bans/panics, but health insurance will Not let us store up extra prescription bottles which would (then) keep us alive.

I can relate with Override, my daughter is a Type one diabetic. Although I have a vested intrest in keeping the rule of law and turning off the fan. I just don't know how to make insulin at home. Usually the pharmacies don't have a lot of insulin on hand at any one time. And once refrigeration is down insulin is only good for about thirty days.

Conversely, if my hand was forced, I would go to work, grab the Skytrac or backhoe and open the building like a pop can. I think speed would be ticket to success, and the fastest way to the pharmacy would be through the concrete block wall. No gun nessasary and the entire time me feeling like a desperate thief.

If you have to move out due to lack of space, you have too much ammo...or need to buy a bigger house.

Yea, I'm a little OCD about the mancave/reloading bunker, but I make up for it in every other square foot I occupy in the house............just ask my wife.

As everybody is different in need , to quantify has to many variables.

Demi-human: thanks. Even some guys with an odd sensation in their chest (my healthy heart masked normal indications) often see no need to see a doctor. Many are afraid of what they will hear.
The point here is to warn people who mention something, but don't want to sound like a hypochondriac. This was part of my flawed thinking.

A primary motivation for storing heaps of ammo is for retirement, and so that we are barely concerned about any future panics or bans.
