Well , I don't know if this fits the criteria of "popular" ... but I checked "other" in the poll because of one of my personal favorites ... Looks like a small 1911 , eh?

Luftwaffe sidearm , anyone? 2014-02-08 09-1.59.04.jpg

I voted other. I have a Glock 9mm pistol used by many military and police forces in the world. A quintessential military pistol cheap to make and reliable.

Cooldill,

Great belt in that pic, and nice Mak. Ive said it before, but I love me some Maks

^^ But was it acquired as a "military surplus" gun? :D

If police trade-ins counted I could add a few more. :)

If other people want to pay full retail for brand-new handguns, good for them. I'll continue to purchase high quality milsurp/PTI handguns for roughly half the price. Some of the ones I've purchased have looked virtually unused. In fact, I'm about to go pick one up from my FFL right now. From the pictures, it looks LNIB.

tark: I have never heard of anyone loading a C-96 with black powder substitute. Lol. Does the barrel extension even move? I can't imagine any black powder substitute generating enough pressure to cycle the gun, but if it works, I want your load and bullet weight! I'll try it in my shooter C-96.

2009 military match awards I got a special plaque for being a special shooter. I get kidded about it. :)
Here's what I have used successfully the past few years:
S&B 7.62x25mm cases
CCI magnum small pistol or small rifle primer
1.0cc dipper measure of Triple Seven (level not heaped) to fill the case to base of bullet (it gets erratic if compressed)
85gr or 90gr bullets.
Last part of the 2017 black powder cartridge season, I ran out of magnum small pistol/small rifle primers and substituted standard small pistol primers. Then I got fail to cycle. That's how close that is to minimum power required.

The only genuine surplus pistol I own is a cz52. I personally found better value in seeking out new or modern manufacture pistols of the same type versus buying surplus, such as the commercial makarov and new production hi power. I must have missed the golden age or surplus firearms because looking at what some of these guns cost today against a modern gun doesn't make sense unless you can personally place a price on historicity, and I say that as the owner of more surplus rifles than pistols. I did not include the commercial mak or hi power in my vote but do wonder if I should have added my vote to the US revolver category as I do have a S&W model 10-5 that was issued to foreign service overseas and re-imported.

I have two like that, both coincidentally made in 1973. One is a Bulgarian PM, and the other is a Star Super B. What are you picking up?

"...the other is a Star Super B. What are you picking up?"

My Star Super B was barely used. My FiL liked it so much that he immediately ordered one for himself, from a different dealer. He paid less, and his was NIB. The finish was perfect, as were the internals.

Yesterday I picked up a PTI Glock Model 22. It's in good shape: a little bit of holster wear and seems to have been shot very little. I was confused about which pistol had arrived. The one that looks LNIB in the pictures is a S&W Model 915. It's supposed to arrive in the next couple of days.

That's the strangest thing I ever heard of! I'm gonna try it .

Back when I had a C&R and was actively collecting milsurps I was mostly buying rifles, but I did get a few pistols - a couple of Nagant revolvers (neat if pointless piece of engineering) and a Yugoslavian Tokarev (goes with my Yugoslavian Mausers), but the real prize is a Chinese contract Inglis Hi Power I bought for a song. Where else can you find a Hi Power with a shoulder stock and 500-meter sights?

Don't own any currently, but some in the past; all .380: M1908, CZ24, (Us prop. and Waffenampt, respectively) Ortgies (obviously not issue, but carried by German officers sometimes)

I have had an Astra Model 600, a wartime Walther P38, a post-war Walther P1, a German Police PP, and a Webley Mk.IV. Currently I have a Manurhin P1 that was at some point in time with the West Berlin Police Department.

All these pics lately of nice P/38s and P1s had me feeling left out. My LGS had 3 that looked unissued show up Friday, so I picked out the nicest one, with holster and extra mag for $475. Don't think I did too bad. Its a '79, probably French built, but its got nice Walther rollmarks, thick slide, and steel shelf. Can't wait to try it out!
I'll post some pics of all my German police guns together when I get it home.

NIGHTLORD40K

Congrats on the P1! I had one those Walther P1s with the holster and spare magazine, imported that way by Interarms at the time. Traded it and a Colt Officers ACP to a friend of mine to get a custom Colt Combat Commander back that I had sold him a few years earlier. Also had a Walther P4, packaged the same way as the P1. It was a sweet gun but ended up trading it for a S&W Model 669. I think back then the P1 sold for around $250 to $275 while the P4 may have closer to $300. Looking forward to your photos and range report.
