As others have said, get into some kind of firearms competition. Keeping score lets you judge your progress, you start loading ammo for a reason, not just to burn it up, and you will meet dozens of nice people who will (for the most part) graciously share their knowledge with you.

I started to shoot bulleyes pistol a couple of years ago, and shoot in a league once a week. I've been doing highpower rifle for quite awhile and try to compete in 2-3 matches a month. I've been making an annual pilgrimage to Camp Perry for the last 20 years or so. I keep trying to get better which is a never ending quest considering I'm getting older. But that doesn't stop me from trying!

I remember you saying that you planned to compete in a 300 yd. match this year. If you like that, maybe that will lead you into F-class or something similar. Competing shouldn't be all about winning. It should be a personal quest to get better.

Camp Perry is in your backyard. Look at a schedule and try to get over their to check it out this summer. Stock up on your handloading supplies on Commercial Row.

I know I chimed in earlier, but will again to add that I always find it engaging to teach or otherwise help folks who are either new to firearms or who know less about a particular aspect of shooting than I do ... and that even when I'm in one of my lulls. I suspect there are a number of members here who spend more time sharing their shooting-related knowledge than they do shooting. I, for one, am in their debt, and hope to be in a position to make a similar contribution as my schedule permits. So engage the newbies and answer the question that has already been asked and answered hundreds of times. They, at least, will appreciate it ... and you will feel good, too!

Too hot now in Phoenix to load in garage. Ben Avery 95 to 100 degrees now and going higher. I have written my reloading process and keep revising it as I see places to elaborate, add a picture or sometbing that might not be obvious to a beginner. Surprisingly, it regrounds me in the basics.

Studying how to improve my equipmet accuracy, both rifle and reloading; ie. I've never run a ladder test, now I am ready with appropriate loads. I have a front stuffer I've never shot, but now after research, it's butning a hole in my pocket. Cast Boolet website had a wonderful and SAFE thread on making your own black powder.

Long way of saying when the largess sets in pick a subject and research it.

Well guys i might have a little help with getting back on board. I've been wanting a Boyd's stock for my rifle for along time and they sent me a 15% off coupon today and I have some rewards cash sitting aside so I'm going to order the stock, pillars and glass bedding material and get started on that. Maybe this will light a little fire under me.

Don't try to force it. If it feels like work, it isn't fun.
I go for months not being able to or feeling like shooting, then I start where I left off.
Like legionnaire said we want pics when you get to it.

Right now I have all the guns I want or need----I do see a new Ruger 9mm carbine in my future though.

Lately I've been getting into lifting weights again---and of course I need some music to lift by, so now I have complete new stereo system and my "cheaper" system still ain't exactly cheap. If you think guns are expensive--you can quickly go down the rabbit hole with audio equipment----there are guys out there with $18,000 worth of cables and wire not counting any actual components.

I've even been staying off the forums pretty much----I'll come back to guns when I get bored with the newer hobbies and interests-----so don't sell all your stuff off, just keep it for when your interest comes back.

Well just an update on this incase anyone cares (most likely not) :).

Its been months since I've fired a gun for pleasure. I haven't reloaded, went to the range in probably 2 months but i will be going tonight to check zero on a rifle and then heading to shoot woodchucks till dark. It kind of hit me the other night when i was talking with a buddy about a girl I've been talking too/hanging out with and he says when is the last time one of your guns left the safe other than ccw? i said um, 2 months! He looks me dead in the eye and says run and run as fast as you can!! Its not due to her but it is taking a lot of my free time. I may start back to school in September and then I'm really screwed with shooting!

Congrats on the lady friend

Don’t feel bad, I won’t say how long it’s been since I’ve shot or reloaded. I will say that I did locate the in door range though so I have no excuse, well except for work and life.

So just know it’s wise to practice as much as you can, but it also shouldn’t interfere in your life. Of course I probably need a buddy like yours to push me to go shoot.

So give us a range report when you get back

He and i used to shoot thousands of rounds a year until he got married and had kids and he slowed down a lot but me being single for many years i would leave work and shoot 2-3 nights a week. Before her and i started talking i was kind of fading from shooting and reloading and she doesn't much care for it so I've just kind of stopped. I'm a little afraid when i hit the range tonight what's going to happen. I took a few 300yard shots on coyotes the other night with a 100yard zero and 3-4'' turret adjustment and didn't hit anything from what we could tell so it needs to be checked or I'm just very rusty!

All things in life neap and ebb. Our hobbies/avocations do also.

As Hokie pointed out early on above, one's larger "Life" will affect the smaller, individual aspects of it.

Small things can combine to have great weight--relationships, work, bad neighbors, all of these can pull the life out of "loved" things.

So, as repeatedly stated above, taking a "breather" and doing something else can be curative. Time, though, is typically the ultimate cure.

That being said, I cannot recommend golf--it's way more expensive than shooting, and far larger a timesuck [:)]

"You go tell the drunk guy with the metal stick he's wearin' a skirt...":D

Really though, Golf is a perfect waste of a good lawn.
It would be a lot more fun if the holes had gongs setup at all sorts of ranges. Shoot a gong you can hit and move to it and so on. Shoot prone off the tee box. Allow a mono stick after that. The last 100yards unsupported. Last 25 with a handgun. This could get real fun. 12” gongs got ladies, 8 men, 4 pro.

I like it!

We can still use the carts, right?
Yup carts for sure. Your gonna need a “sniper rifle” for off the tee box, something for those longer shots off a stick. A carbine or AR for offhand and a pistol. Lots of ammo too. And don’t forget the cooler. May have to put a cap on beers by weight of the player though :(

Agreed. They aught to do that for golf...

Or maybe update the rules.
Romberg the Super Bowl ad with tackle golf?

Instead of tackle golf, maybe combine it with shooting. Maybe put a beer can on the flag. Closest to the hole takes the first shot. Hit the beer with a shot from a rifle or pistol and you get a point. Miss and you have to drink the beer.

I gave up trap shooting about 5 years ago and sold most of my shotguns. I also gave away all my shot and components. I have presses that just take up space. Just haven't got them up for sale yet. I just lost interest in the game. I didn't do much in the way of shooting for several years. I've always had an interest in bench rest shooting so purchased a few rifles and now I'm hooked on it. I also shoot a lot more pistol than I used to. Now I reload for both and hit the range once a week with my neighbor.

Sometimes it just takes switching up the format. Buy a pistol caliber carbine and see if that doesn't light a flame. I couldn't tell from your post if you reload or not. If you don't, start. I enjoy that as much as I do shooting. Keeps me sane during the long wet cold winters we have here.

Things change in our lives. Perhaps it is time to sell off the firearms and buy some golf clubs and buy a membership at a country club? A lot of people seem to enjoy playing golf.
