So.

So I got that itch.

A new gun might could be in my future.

As all of you might have surmised, there could be leanings towards a pocket .380. Of the single action variety.

I’ve pretty well narrowed it down to the Colt Mustang Pocketlite or the Kimber Micro .380 (base model, either two-tone or stainless).

The Colt is a Colt, and the progenitor of the style.

The Kimber has more useful sights, and runs about a bill or so less than the Colt.

Before anyone speaks up, the Sig 238 is way too squared off and blocky for my personal tastes. Aesthetics, I know, but sometimes that matters.

Much of this will come down to what I can actually put hands on when the time comes.

All that being said, does anyone have any strong feelings one way or the other as far as these two choices go?

Background lays out that my most carried guns are either a Glock 19 or a S&W 642.

Curiously, I would be most likely seeking a holster for OWB carry for the .380.

Thank you for your input.

I've had the Colt and the SIG. Both were I excellent and I kick myself for letting them go. Probably get another some day. Haven't shot the Kimber, but honestly all 3 are clones of the same gun, so I say grab the one you get the best deal on. There are probably many more accessories and spare parts available for the Colt and SIG, though, of course, there is some interchangeability across all of them. My Mustang and SIG both ran fine with each others magazines though some people have reported issues there.

Oh, SA is making a Mustang clone now too, the 911. Personally I think it looks atrocious, but check it out.

I have both the Colt Mustang and the SIG P238. No experience with the Kimber Micro .380. Have had the Mustang for over 30 years and it has been steadfastly reliable, durable, and surprisingly accurate while being very comfortable (and controllable), to shoot. Nice trigger as well right out of the box. Light enough for pocket carry and I really like all the rounded edges to the gun. Only downside for me is the small fixed sights.

I agree with you about all the squared off edges on the P238 but more for handling reasons than aesthetics. On the plus side for the P238 are great sights (mine came with factory night sights), and a decent trigger like the Mustang.

Sorry no recommendation for an OWB holster (though I do have DeSantis's L-GAT SLIDE and E-GAT SLIDE holsters for other guns and like them a lot), but for a belt holster for either of these two guns I like the DeSantis IWB SOF-TUCK.

Hope this helps with your decision and let us know what you decide to go with.

My preferred small single action .380 is an AMT Backup. The original single action .380. I looked at the Backup II, DAO version and found it wanting.

Springfield is also in the game now with their version. I haven’t handled one so not sure of the difference between it and the Sig or Colt.

The Colt Mustang, Springfield 911, Sig P238 and the Kimber are the same design. Some versions have ambidextrous safety if that matters to you.

Bersa duo tone .380, while it is not SA only, the DA is good. Carry in a Uncle Mike's holster IWB or OWB with reversable clip. Shoots well, groups well and won't break the bank. Buy another one for your wife with the money saved on the Colt.

My preferred small single action .380 is an AMT Backup. The original single action .380.

I had a couple of those when they first came out. Liked the size and the stainless steel construction but didn't care for the heavy trigger pull, the location of the safety, and the non-existent sights. When the Colt Mustang came out I sold the AMT Back-Up and another gun that I had to get enough cash together to buy the Mustang.

Still have the Mustang; great little SAO .380!

Thank you all for your input.

I was leaning towards the Colt, as I had laid hands on some examples at a gun show or two, and it felt pretty good to heft.

I have manhandled several examples of the Sig, and they just weren’t as comfy.

I was mainly distracted by the Kimber due to the more useful sights, though I have never encountered one in the wild.

I waffled about the Glock 42, but it doesn’t seem as small. Nor does it speak to me the way the Mustang did, in spite of my personal love for the G19.

Well, the Ruger LCP II is technically single action, so guess I'll toss my "can't carry IWB so have to pocket carry" gun out there.

Ok, ya liked my comment. So, look at a Remington RM380. DA every shot, two more rounds than the J Frame. It’s flat, all stainless and aluminum, reliable and easy to carry.

And, cheap.

SA pocket guns just don’t do it for me.

I’m a huge fan.

Colt Mustang or Kimber Micro, flip a coin. I have both and both shoot well and reliably.

I've not tried swapping magazines because I also have a Sig P238 and, at least mine, does not like the Mustang magazines. I get jams every few magazines. So, I have no desire to experiment with with Mustang magazines in the Kimber or vice versa.

Factory magazines should be readily available these days as both guns have been on the market for a while and production should have caught up with demand.

Well this decision will have to wait.

My missus and I attended our monthly flea market this morning, and I stumbled across a .32 Pocket Hammerless, type 2 if I’m not mistaken.

Shooter grade, as it has almost no finish left, and curiously seems to have been fitted with a type 1 barrel from what I can figure.

I have one of those but the barrel on mine doesn't stick out like that one. I've seen them in that condition where the seller wanted $700. Hope you didn't pay that for it. They shoot REAL nice and will only appreciate in value.

Before your last post I was going to say that it looks to me like you have already made up your mind and the Mustang was your choice. I think it is a good choice.

Great find! The original Type 1 Colt Pocket Hammerless had a 4" barrel and a slightly longer frame. Serial numbers started with 1 and went to 71,999. The Type 2 had a 3 3/4" barrel and shorter frame and serial numbers ran from 72,000 to 105,050. The Type 3 had the Type 2 shorter barrel and did away with the barrel bushing. Serial numbers ran from 105,051 to 486,096 making it the most common of the 4 Types of Colt .32 autos. The Type 4 was the same as the Type 3 only it had a magazine safety. Serial number range was 486,097 to 572,214.

Thanks for the comments & info.

The serial number puts it just shy of 2000 before the switch to the type 3. According to the Colt website, it was made in 1910.

The barrel sticking out puzzled me at first, that’s what causes me to think it is a type 1 (4 inch) barrel in the shorter slide. It doesn’t bother me that much, but I might keep my eyes peeled for a correct barrel. There is a company I found that sells replacements, but they are out of stock on the correct one, and I am uncertain if they will obtain or produce more. But like I said, it doesn’t really bug me that much for now.

No, I didn’t pay that much. I got it for $425. If it shoots as is, or without too much tinkering, I feel like it will be worth every cent.

I’ve wanted one for a while, waited too long, and they were scarce and the prices kept creeping up. I had resigned myself to never having one, so I was most pleased to find this one.

As far as the original topic, I was waffling in a new direction towards a Glock 42. Now that I have more time to consider, I am reminded that it was the Mustang that piqued my interest in the first place, so that is likely the direction I will go when the time comes.

Thanks again for the kind and informative words.

I sort of like the longer Type 1 barrel; kind of sets it apart from the other Type 2s out there! Full range report when you get a chance.
