So I've been eyeballing one of the new Savages in 17hmr with the thumbhole stock and varmint barrel and accutrigger. Rural King has them on sale right now for $389.00. Anybody already own one? If so, what are your thoughts? Also what are your thoughts on the cartridge itself. I've never owned a 17 caliber before. I would be using it primarily for vermen. Ie: armadillos, possum, coons and such.

I really have a lot of fun with the 17 HMR. I shoot mine, a CZ 452, all the time. It's extremely accurate. For the animals you mentioned, possums and coons its probably ideal, I'm not sure about the armadillos because we don't have them around here... A friend and I each have a 17HMR and we spend hours shooting cans and clay targets and then little pieces of clay targets out at 200 yards... I highly recommend it..

My father has one. It will shoot shotgun shells at 200 yards

Sorry for the repost but here is a 3 shot group on a shotgun shell I shot with my 17HMR at 100 yards... It's less than a 1/2 inch..

I would not hesitate- I have a blued heavy barrel with a walnut thumbhole stock... it was a Dicks sporting goods special. It is a great gun and I love it even more every time I think about it. They had a gun buy back locally a few years back. A friend of mine was staying with me after his wife went nutz. The radio kept advertising the buy back as get a 100.00 food card or tennis shoes. I took 3 absolute tomato stake-wallhanger/junk guns to it. I had every intention of turning them into 300.00 in meat... When I heard the workers asking if I wanted the gift certificates to the food store or Dicks I could hardly keep from laughing, I turned the 300 in gift cards into the savage that was on sale with a 3x9 scope on sale for 299.00 on the way home :p the lil 17hmr was on my list for a long time but other stuff was always catching my attention first. Dicks limited gun selection and it being on sale made it a done deal. I have used it on many groundhogs!

I had a Savage 17hmr and it was very accurate for the shooting I was doing. The magazines were frustrating at times.

I really enjoy shooting my 17 HMR, it's like a tiny little centerfire out to 200 yds or so. At $11 - $13 for a 50 rd box it's as cheap as crappy steel cased .223, but general much more accurate.

I've shot exactly one armadillo with a 20gr soft point and it dropped where it was standing, didn't even wiggle.

Im a big fan of the 17 HMR and purchased a Marlin 17V back in 2004. Absolute tack driver. I only wish I had bought the non-varmint barrel version as I hunt with it more than I bench shoot......however, it bench shoots great and makes groups at 100 like the shotshell pictured above.

Like I said I have the Marlin, but I also had a Savage bull barrel .22 that shot clovers at 50 sometimes. Savage makes great rimfires so that one should be a winner.

I don’t own a 17hmr but do own it’s little brother, the 17m2. The 17 caliber rim fire cartridges are fun.

I own two Savage rim fire rifles with their heavy barrel. One in 22lr and the other in 17m2. Both rifles are very accurate. The 17 is an older MkII without the accu-trigger and the 22 is newer E receiver with accu-trigger.

I think that you will like the Savage rifle with heavy barrel no matter which caliber you get.

I got in the 17 Mach 2 game late... used to be real cheap :( I got a mk II after they had really dried up a few years back- I saw a plain MKII at a local shop brand new on the shelf- it came home with me, I scored 3000 rounds of ammo cheap before the shortages. I found a used boyds thumbhole for a heavy barrel and mounted my slim barrel MKII in it... I love that lil gun :) My suburban varmit gitter

That sounds like a 93r17btvs...I'm assuming it's stainless?

I had one for a few years, it was never as accurate as they we're suppose to be. That was likely just the particular rifle I had tho, all other reports have been extremely positive.
Everything else about the rifle was great.

The guy who bought it shoots pigs with it, and and as far as I know is completely happy with it

I have the Savage A17 which is a semi w a synth stock & a Marlin xt-17 in bolt, wooden stock
The Marlin is a tad more accurate it to 200yrds, but not by much.
As a semi, the Savage is more fun to take out, but every once in a blue moon, I have a bad magazine kind of day with it.
Although I prefer Marlins in general, I'd have to say in this case, I like the Savage better for .17hmr.
The .17 is a fun, flat shooter. But check if there are any cows in nearby fields. Depending on which way they're facing, if one of them passes gas while your bullet is going by, your shot will get knocked wide before it gets near the target. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but you do have to compensate quite a bit for even mild crosswinds, but that can make it a fun challenge.

piglets I hope. I know lots of people shoot coyotes with them but thats the first time I've ever heard of someone using one on hogs lol. That seams about like using a 22-250 on buffalo.

I've got the same rifle in a left hand version. I am very pleased with the Hornaday 17gr ammo, never went for the 20 grain. Got a number of critter kills, including crows and coyotes. Very accurate and very effective. Don't forget you'll need the smaller cleaning rod. The thing is blazingly fast. I've shot empty soda cans without toppling them. Through and through.

Great cartridge: flat shooting, accurate, and while not .22 cheap, economical enough to shoot all afternoon--at least through my Winchester 9417. They must be a real blast going through a semi-auto.

Yes, stainless

Thanks for all the impute guys. I've owned an older Savage tactical rifle in 223 and it was dead accurate. It's been hit or miss for me lately with newer made rifles from various manufacturers, hence the question about the rifle itself. Having no experience with 17's the insights have been great. Will be pulling the trigger on this one.

Not my idea of a pig gun either, but there's alot of guys here who swear by them.
Applied properly, im sure it works fine. You don't hear about the ones that got away tho.

I had a chance to shoot a friend's Savage bolt action 17 HMR a couple of weeks ago. It's an amazing little cartrdge. Fun to shoot, especially with a suppressor. However, I would suggest getting the model with the rotary magazine. My buddy's Savage uses the box magazine and getting them to feed reliably was a complete nightmare.

Does Savage use both types?
