apparently this is been going on awhile but I was only made aware of it last night. They refused to sell rifle ammo after 9pm. Shotgun ammo you can buy all you want. Now I have to make a second trip there before going to the range this morning. Walmart is a bigger threat to the 2nd amendment then the government is.

At the local Wally-Worlds, they won't unlock the case after 9PM or maybe it's 10PM. So if it's in the case, no luck. If it's out of the case (as shotgun ammo usually is), you can buy it any time.

I haven't asked about it, but my impression is that the restriction has more to do with staffing after a certain time of night (finding someone with keys to open the case) than it does with any sort of company stance on late-night ammo purchases.

It has been going on a long time--in fact I think it's always been their policy.

I once (BR - Before Reloading) bought some ammo at our local Walmart after 8pm. I had to hunt down an associate to get the key to the cabinet, and he walked me to the front of the store to check out at the service desk.

Never did that again.

If only people could stock up on ammo, or buy it online, they wouldn't be inconvenienced by such nonsense.

Use to be here that you couldn't buy beer on Sunday, yet I never didn't have beer available on Sunday. ;)
The nonsense no longer bothers me... just like your beer example, there are plenty of times you CAN buy ammo 6-days a week. Of course, I can't remember the last time I bought factory ammo... I just don't trust the stuff!;)

It's a staffing thing. They don't have the sports counter open then (they can't or won't just open it, because it would need counted in and out again), and don't have the extra staff to spare to running a keyholder there and then up to the register for the same reason they keep it locked up--like a good handful of other things, it's a theft item.
Most corporate policies aren't anti-gun and therefore anti-profit, they're based on loss prevention or corporate greed.

Walmart's goal is to profit from the sale of merchandise, and they are very good at it. They don't have to sell ammo or anything else, if it isn't profitable, and nobody has to shop there. The "corporate greed" of Walmart, and any other publicly traded company, is a good thing for share holders and anyone can become one.

I don't see it as a threat. They are still selling ammo correct? I bet they sell beer too, but quit selling it after a certain time. At my local WallyWorld, most ammo is in a locked case and requires the "sporting goods manager" on duty, to open it. If they aren't there, you are SOL. Shotgun ammo and popular rifle calibers during the gun deer season are on open shelves and available anytime. You also must pay for the ammo at the Sporting Goods desk, or the manager must "walk it up" to the service counter in the front of the store. Not a big deal, just their policy.

I haven't tried to buy ammo after 9 or 10 in the last 3 years at work, but when I worked overnights, we sold ammo all night. You sometimes had to hunt down the keyholder, and they rang you up at Sporting Goods, as buck460XVR said. Shotgun ammo you can grab off the shelf and bring up front (fun going through the self-checks!)
As for beer and such, thank heaven my store doesn't. Overnight customers can be looney enough without that headache.

I don't think it is a anti-gun thing. The Wal-Mart closest to me is putting much of it's sporting good merchandise behind locked glass cases.

I wanted to buy a new fishing reel last summer and had to track down someone as all of the reels are locked in a gas case. (It was just a Zebco 33).

Likewise I want to buy another battery powered lantern. They have all of them in locked glass cases. Well I want to compare features and lumens before picking one so it is going take me a while to make up my mind. All the while I have the store associate standing there waiting for me to be done. I am not going to buy when I am feeling pressured.

I work evening shift and stopped in at Wal-Mart recently around 11:30 pm. Man that place was flat spooky with the only employee (yes only one) I saw was at the checkout. I at least expected to see some employees stocking shelves. I got to thinking who was going to stop me from breaking into the cases.

It is probably a simple matter of profits. Look at how big the automotive department is. The actual gun merchandise at my store is one short isle with a dozen or so long guns at the counter.

Yea, it is a staffing issue. A few years ago I was looking for an 870 youth 20 ga. The 2 local Walmarts didn't have one in stock, but I dropped in one in the next town over while passing through and found one. Unfortunately it was after 5pm on a Friday and there was no one in the store trained to sell guns. They told me that if I came back on Saturday between 9AM and 5PM they would not only sell me the gun, but give me a $25 gift card for my trouble.

The next day they honored the gift card and applied it to the shotgun. That along with the rebate Remington was running at the time got me into the gun cheap.

I don't quite see it that way. It's merely an inconveniece to you by not selling after 9 or 10 PM, whichever it is and not a 2A threat. It will be there for sale in the morning.

Usually this wouldn’t be a big deal as some say. It is to me because I drove 6 miles there and 6 miles back and will have to do it again

I can't reasonably afford brick and mortar prices, and have bulk bought most of my ammo online for years now for that reason. Additionally, that means it's always on hand for going to the range. "Stay ready, so you don't have to get ready."

at Walleyworld, there are Assistant Managers who have a locker full of keys, who assign the keys to Zone Supervising Managers, who give the keys to the regular sales people, but are still responsible for them. Since the sales floor doesn't usually staff customer service stations after a certain time, those keys have to be held by the ZSM, and they usually don't have more than one shift per 24 hours, so the keys are returned to the locker, and you have to get an assistant manager to open them, and good luck with that. Employees are encouraged to make up stories and excuses to customers to hide walmarts staffing policies, and thats one of the big reason why no one really knows whats happening in any given situation. Edit to add. Those keys frequently carry the entire facility key sets, and if lost, the store is actually re-keyed completely. It can cost $15000, so they take the keys very seriously. Yup, I have seen it.

There's not much good happening at Walmart after 9pm...after 11pm, forget about it. Unless you are there just for the entertainment value of the trip, I wouldn't recommend going there that late to actually buy something, be it ammo or anything else.

Six miles is not a greater threat to the 2nd Amend. than the government.
Here's the hours of a LGS : HOURS: Tuesday - Friday 9AM to 6PM and Saturday 9AM to 1PM
Must be the Social Wave.

Anything else reasonable to be said.

The closest Walmart to me does not lock ammo so next time after 10Pm I'm picking up turkey wings, Pomi, organic eggs, Sams Choice chicken noodle,.... I'm going to pick up a box of my beloved Federal HST 9mm Micro. I want some Federal .38HST Micro (the best defensive .38 load in the world and made in los EU) for my new revolver but I can order on line for about $10 box per 20 less.
