Made it out to the range yesterday to meet up with a friend. I brought a few guns.
Glock 44
Taurus TX22
S&W M&P M2.0 9mm
HK VP9
My 12yo niece had asked me to take her shooting. She had never fired a gun before.

We had a blast. After going over safety and handling, we got to shooting plates.
She’s a lefty but was hitting point of aim in short time. She loved the 22s.
The only problem she had was with placement of her offhand thumb. After I explained what could happen to her thumb if the slide were to hit it, she No longer had no problem with her grip.

After we shot up around 200 rounds of 22 ammo, I asked her if She wanted to shoot a 9mm.
She had watched me and my friend shoot the plates. She asked how much more did the 9mm kick. I told her that it was more, but if she kept a proper grip on the gun, she would do fine.
Well, I have to say that I was impressed. She did great and was able to hit a 10” plate at 10 yards pretty good.

She did get a few stove pipes, but when she did, she kept the gun pointed down range and waited for me to clear the gun. She ended up shooting 30 rounds of 9mm with the VP9.

When we were on our way to the range, she told me that she was a little scared about shooting for the first time.
On the way home she was asking when could we go again.

That’s just great! Good for you (and her)!

Thanks for sharing! It's always nice to read these types of stories.

This seems to be such a common occurrence. Hopefully she shares this part of her story far and wide. I've yet to meet anyone who'd ever fired a gun that didn't enjoy it. (Age and experience appropriate guns at least)

Gunny, outstanding!

How accurate is your TX22. Mine is on its second barrel, and no longer leads, but it's marginally accurate. It appears to keyhole a round one in a while as well.

Cool! A day at the range with Uncle Gunny!

She needs to shoot well keep the boys in their place!

I’m a little more accurate with the TX22 then I am with the G44, but I think that has more to do with the trigger. I haven’t had any trouble with the barrel.

On the way home she texted her mother and sent her pictures. Her mother is a little on the anti gun side, she doesn’t like them.
The funny thing is, she has two older brothers and they have no interest in guns.
Last year I bought my niece a pocket knife. Now she has over 20. I guess I’ll have to get her her first gun also.

Those are some great shots in several senses, and some great memories for both of you.
Relatives are like the other people we encounter. Some are distracted and some just seem to lock onto the frequency when the time is right. Those really enrich our lives.

Good for you. Trying to 'mention' shooting to my 7 and 9yo grand daughters. Dad all in favor, mom, not really..like riding without training wheels, when they say, 'let's go', we will...grand mom(my wife), not thrilled but Dad has guns, cleans them often on the dining room table so they know what they are, when not in the safe(s)...

Very nice. My daughter is 12 but was also 10 when she shot a 9mm for the first time. I was super proud of how well she handled the 9mm for the first time and she wanted to keep shooting until all the ammo we brought was gone. I'm usually pretty good at telling the difference between "because I think dad wants me to" and "I actually want to" and she was definitely having a good time.

I hope it's the first of many and you get to take her again soon. That's what uncles are for. Good job. Take pride in it, she is learning a skill that could save her life or at the very least give her another healthy activity to enjoy....

Thats a great story! Thanks for sharing it with us. She is a pretty young lady and it looks like she really enjoyed the day.
