I had a nice day at the range today. I took a female friend out shooting for her Birthday. We talked about going to range a year ago, but put it off when some health problems came up in her family that took much of her time. I thought she'd actually lost interest, but surprised me a couple weeks ago by asking when we'd go shoot.

This was the first time she's done any shooting since she was a kid and she was nervous, but excited. I gave her a safety briefing and some basic instructions on stance, sight picture and trigger control and then we went at it. We started at about 10 feet and gradually moved back to about 7 or 8 yards.

I thought she'd like my Ruger Mk II Govt Target Model, but she said the long barrel made it too heavy and awkward for her. Instead she used my CZ-75 with the .22 Kadet kit. She liked the gun and fired about 250 rounds. She also tried my S&W Model 18 .22 revolver and we finished the day with her trying my 9mm CZ-75 and a S&W M-15 .38. She liked the CZ, even though the 9mm had more "kick" then the .22, but she didn't care for the revolver.

We were out there about 3 hours and we both had a good time. I think I only fired 10 rounds of .22 through the CZ once when I was demonstrating something. Other then that, she did all the shooting.

She did well. She had some nice groups with the .22 and seemed to be forming some good, consistent habits.

It helped that we had the range to ourselves most of the day. We did have to move back to the 25 yard line at one point when some other shooters arrrived. I had her shoot from the bench then. She did OK there as well, but found the position uncomfortable and didn't care for it much.

She said she'll let her husband come with her the next time. This time she felt she'd learn better one-on-one and didn't want to feel like she was competing with him.

All in all, I'd say it was a good day.

Rob - that sort of day is always satisfying - and rewarding too IMO.

Taking a class usually is a good experience but one on one like this .. really, nothing better when it can be done.

Any and every time I take someone new ... or even just plain ''rusty'' ..... and they finish ahead of the game .. it's good .. feeling of achieving something, plus - so often ... their wide, satisfied grin!!:p :)
