Came across a good deal on a DPMS Gen II barrel in .260 Rem.

Will a Gen II barrel fit a Gen I LR308 upper? I thought the difference between GI and GII was in upper dimensions, but not necessarily in the upper's barrel nut threads.

Nothing I've read so far addresses barrel differences

CDNN? :)

From my understanding, they don't fit. Indeed if they were interchangeable, there wouldn't be much point in specifically marking the barrels Gen 1 or 2 - it would just be general DPMS/LR-308 pattern.

It will not fit. The barrel extension has a different OD and the bolt lugs on the Gen II are very different. Gen II use a bolt lugs that are rounded where the original LR308 are squared off. There are very few parts that are interchangeable between the two. There are probably more parts from and AR-15 that will work with a Gen II than parts from an LR-308.

Yes, CDNN. Thank you!

I'd also like to throw in that with almost all third party support being based on the Gen1, and the demise of Remington/DPMS, it's likely that Gen2 will fade into obscurity. The .308 AR scene was already too confusing without DPMS introducing a 3rd pattern - particularly when their Gen1 pattern was the one that most companies were more or less converging on.

Very true but if you had ever handled a Gen II especially if you had a similar configured LR-308 to compare it to you would gain an appreciation for that platform. DPMS/Remington did a horrible job promoting and educating that platform but it truly was a fairly large step forward for the 308 AR platform. So much more svelte the then LR-308 with a bolt carrier the same diameter as an AR-15. We can only hope PSA brings the DPMS GII and Remington Defense R10 back, not that I am going to hold my breath.

I have the Gen I stainless bull barrel and its a great shooter. I just wish it was threaded for a suppressor. I have considered getting it done, but the QD mount for my GemTech would look pretty goofy on it when the suppressor was off.

Magazines were an issue until the MagPuls came out.
