got a favorite .243?

Years ago I had a Remington 788 in .243 that I bought for my son to use. It was bug hole accurate with handloads. When he graduated to a 30-06 I sold it. I bought a 700 in .243 but need money for a house and sold it. Last fall I bought another one for family to use. It is sub MOA.
I wouldn't be interested in that Mauser but to each his own.

I love Mannlichers. But I don’t love that Mannlicher. If I were going for something slightly different, I agree with @troy fairweather. An FN Mauser would be nice. I have one in 270 I bought a few years ago for like $400. I stole the damn thing. It doesn’t like ANYTHING over 150gr bullets. Shoots 130gr Sierra’s over 4064 at an inch or slightly under an inch on a really good day. But it shoots 90gr Speers that cloverleaf (3 shots). They are really nice rifles. Another different rifle would be an Interarms Mark X. You can get them in a traditional or Mannlicher stock. I bought a Mannlicher 2 years ago in 308 with a Leupold QDMA 3-9x40 for $450. The gun is 98-99%. Being a Mannlicher, it’s not exceptionally accurate. But I haven’t worked up any loads for it. Just shooting factory ammo, it’s a 1.75”-2” gun right now. I think I can cut that by 1/2” with the right load. Sorry for the crappy pic. I’m going to remedy this with all my rifles soon.

If at the end of the day, you really like that Parker and want it, buy it. Somebody liked it once. Someone is bound to like it again. Maybe that person is you.

Yeah good grab on that mannlicher and scope, only wish I could find that deal when I have money lol. I did get my 7x57 ruger 77ts cheap, seen some on gb for $1500+

Believe it or not, my very favorite .243 was a Herters U9, commercial mauser action, beautiful wood, 24" pencil bbl. Very accurate and uncommonly twisted to like 100 gr projectiles, the real plus was the added action length to set bullets well out of the case to the optimum leade engagement and still work in the magazine, unlike my next favourite, an old beater 788 Remington

FWIW, my 243 is a Savage model 110. I learned to love the accuracy, but it probably weighs close to 10 lbs slung and scoped and is a pain to pack around. Not a bad gun, but overbuilt for what it is IMO.

My first 243 was an m111 savage, well worn when I bought it, had some throat erosion soost factory ammo, used to get cases for reloading, wouldn't shoot well, still hunting accurate, but really shined with reloads and a 2.700" oal. Picked up another savage m11 in 243 win for my granddaughter to hunt with, not the prettiest girl at the party but does have some redeeming qualities IMG_20201025_185635.jpg

This is my only "stock" .243 Win; early 1980s 700 BDL. Also have a couple of .243 Ackleys.

My new favorite .243 for the last couple years is a Mannlicher Schoenauer model 1961 full stocked carbine which I put a Zeiss HD5 3-15x42 Conquest on in the factory mounts instead of the 4x old Redfield it came with. It is perfect and I won't sell it, I'll bet I can still handle it at 90 ! :)

I didn't have a favorite .243 when I opened this thread, but I do now!

I have a friend that has an Axis II in .243. Not pretty, but it'll put 'em in the same hole at 100 yards, whether he or I are behind the trigger. That one is a distant second.

Tikka595.JPG I love my Tikka .243. One of the best bolt-action rifles I've shot! I like the removable magazine too. It's shot a few deer, coyotes, woodchucks, and some really nice groups at the 100 yard range. The rifle you're looking at is nicely carved, but it would not be for me. The scope presently on this rifle is a Tikka T3 3-9X in lower mounts. It's a very nice varmint rifle and has a great action/trigger!

(The scope isn't the regular one, which is a Leupold 3-9X in low mounts. The scope shown was used in an attempt to get tighter groups and that proved good.)

The .243 is NOT my favorite cartridge, but my favorite rifle is a .243...
It is a discontinued Marlin XS7. I like the action and stock.

The one I have presently is my second one. The first I sold to the grandmother of a young man I mentored. She gave it to him as a 14th birthday gift. I replaced it with the present one.
Mine wears an older Redfield Revenge 3-9x scope. I shot a nice 9pt buck with it this past season. One shot bang flop, but I wasn’t happy with the performance. The deer took too long to succumb. Bullet recovered weighed 51.5gr (100gr Sierra ProHunter @3,050fps mv). 140yd shot out my kitchen window...

I wish it was a .257Roberts... my .257 Wby with a 100gr bullet kicks it’s rear end, as does the .270, or even the Rem M7 in .260.
Not even close to my all time favorite, the M7 in 7mm08.
But, I needed to use the Marlin to justify its existence!..... 8F0C1119-2DE3-485F-ABF8-E8E27EEA2017.jpeg

Actually I believe the U-9 is a BSA action, the J-9 was the Mauser action, it’s a Zestava, same thing as the MK-X. I’ve got a U-9 30-06 Deluxe version, great guns, the J-9s are fine guns too, about the same thing as a Parker-Hale. The Parker-Hale is built on a Spanish built Santa Barbra Mauser action. Nice guns, but I wouldn’t take that thing as a gift if I had to keep it and use it! I bought the Sako instead of the Parker-Hale at the Rod and Gun club at Patch Barracks in Stuttgart in 1972. No regrets!

Only one thing I dislike more than a Mannlicher stock and that's one with cheesy carving on it. But, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so buy it if you like it. My favorite is my current one which is a Remington 700 CDL. Nice wood and with my reloads I've killed 3 deer in the last 3 years; one behind the ear, one between the eyes and the 3rd just below the chin, all shots went where I aimed. Gotta love a .243 that does that, eh?
