If you were a wildcatter, what kind of cartridge would you create ?

Its already been done 45acp necked down to 22. Think it's called the 22 Flea

I’d probably just duplicate what some other round(s) can do and come up with a cool name. Seems to be a successful method.

Something in 6.5mm that delivers 140 grs at about 2800 fps from a short action. That’s what we really need.

I have thought about it a lot over the years and have several books on it. However, just about everything I have pondered has been done or it (honestly) shouldn't be done. I think it is even tougher now to create a successful wildcat. Have to time it to either a new case coming out or a new bullet diameter that will work at the velocity you need said bullet to perform. And, even then, insiders have access to these cases and bullets so have a few steps on us.

Also, as I age I enjoy the classics more and more so see little need for something "new" (which often isn't) that means new dies/brass/bullets for me to then maybe get a few % performance out of it. Then, to find out it died before I knew it and am now stuck with another odd ball in the safe.

I think someone should neck the 300BLK down to .224

That’s a great idea with the 300 bo. Maybe call it a .224 short. Haha.

Or they could neck the 35 Whelen to .30, or do the same for the .338. I gots all sorts of "great" ideas............
Better yet, expand the .270 up to 30.

Please don't get me wrong. I think it is great for people to try new things and push the envelope, and I spent a lot of time pondering it, but it is less so for me now.

Neck a 9mm Luger down to .25

Rebated rim. The .50 Beowulf is the most exagerated rebated rim I have ever seen. Something along those lines but coming back to a more standard diameter like a .308.

You could use a 260 Remington....but have to slow it down.

.30 Parabellum or .30 Short Carbine. Basically .30 carbine shortened up to fit a standard pistol grip, launching a 110g projectile in the 1200-1300fps range from a pistol. With modern powders, should be able to just get there, and should be able to get at least 20 rounds in the mag

shorten the neck, sharpen the shoulder and straighten the case a little, then chamber it in the savage 99 and it would be perfect.........

Id like a 7mm PRC....the long one....which I expect soon....its also already been done as the 7LRM.

We necked the .223 remington to 30 cal for the blackout round...

Why not do that with the 5.7?

Isn't 5.7 just mini 223 (not exactly, of course but you get the idea)

There were a couple of separate Euro-cop ".32 Super" projects, although not that hot. Trick bullets gave light armor penetration with low recoil for the polis.

This is basically the idea I was toying with. A 30 cal pistol cartridge would mean increased capacity and put enough speed behind it with modern powders and you could have something interesting

.380 ACP necked to .22. Basically a 5.45x18 but with more case capacity and a shorter OAL.

I can’t really see anything that a wildcat could bring to the shooting world that ain’t already there.

I would create two based on the 7.62 NATO case, one in .257 and the other in .277.

I had to look that up as it sounds insane. Looks like the 22 Flea is actually a .32 acp necked down. The only .45 acp to .22 I found was a a 22/45 Tuba which I can't tell is a real wildcat or just someone playing around as a joke.
