It occurred to me the other day that maybe I have been overlooking the venerable .380acp unfairly. I like it as a very tiny pocket gun and as a gun for my wife (more the platform than the caliber in that case tbh...) but I always figured for a home defense gun a 9 or 45 was probably the way to go, for the usual reasons.
Then I started to look at the ballistics charts, and it seems like, from a longer barrel, the caliber is really quite effective. I have a CZ-83 in .32, and the .380 version of the same gun holds 12+1 and should be as effective as one could wish, with the added benefit of notably lower decibel levels vs. 9mm, if one ever had to fire the gun indoors.
Only problem is, I really prefer a locked breech, for recoil mitigation. Straight blowback is fun in .32 and smaller, but it becomes a handful (for me) in the .380s.
So, the question: what good options exist in the Full Size or Compact category, that aren’t simple blowbacks?
