How far do you travel to the shooting range?

I moved from a very rural area to a semi-rural area. In this new location, we have a state run range, but the rules are :

  • You are not allowed to have more than 3 bullets in any detachable magazine at a time.
  • You must wait 3 seconds between each shot
  • You cannot use targets that look like people
A bunch of straight up Elmer Fudd BS. There's another private range up here and I know someone who uses it, but COVID-19 / the riots resulted in a ton of new firearms owners showing up at that range and doing so much unsafe stuff they basically closed registration until next January.

The only other range I know of is 45 minutes away (across the highway) and it's only 100 yards.

Where do you shoot at? How far do you drive to get to your range? Do you like it?

My goal is to get enough property that I can eventually just shoot there.

Bout 45mins to the nearest place i shoot.
If i want any kinda distance tho, i have to go up to Maunakea and shoot in the hunting area.

Hour plus drive to a spot in the brush. Ranges locally are closed and generally suck when open. Used to go to an awesome range that was 15 minutes away. County commissioners aka real estate agents decided they wanted that land.

My usual range is 2 1/5 - 3 miles out of town. An uphill bicycle ride with one or two handguns when I'm feeling ambitious. I frequently have the place to myself - as do most members. If there are more than one group present, many times we are spread out between rifles, handguns, rimfire, and/or 500 yard range that we don't interfere with each other.

It's a one hour drive to my range. It's a public state ran range that is 150 yards. It's pretty good and the range master is pretty cool. But, no double taps, one second between shots.

State range 70 miles, local indoor 75 '-10 minutes. I don't like using a rifle at a indoor range-so the long ride. Went to the state range last week & froze to death--where is warm weather

Home range so it's not a long commute:

Off the back deck gets me to 407 and 547 yds. I've got a bench on a concrete slab that goes to 200 and 307 yds with steel swingers. I've also got a graveled pistol range and berms with steel out to 760yds.

I do travel to a 3 public ranges, but that's for matches (IDPA & 3Gun) all 3 of those are within an hr's drive. .

10 miles round trip for mine... is the closest.

But my favorite is 36 miles round trip to the huntin' shack where there are "our rules and range" and no one else is there!
And a big plus is I can get there at any time of the year, whether pick-up truck, atv, or snowmobile, nature determining mode of travel...:)

20 minutes one way to my outdoor club. Tactical bays for pistol, carbine, and shotgun; separate handgun range. 100 and 200 yard rifle positions are always open, 300 and 500 only for supervised events at this point. When next phase of reconstruction is complete, 300 and 500 should be open more frequently.

My range is a 5 minute walk. I have a range with a backstop for paper and some hanging steel. It’s about 130 yards now but if a shade tree dies I’ll bump it out to 200. Also remodeling a old building and when done I’m hopping to ring some steel from it at 300 to 400 yards.

5 minute drive for up to 200. 20 minute drive for up to 2 miles. A 20 minute drive for me to shoot that far is a waste of gas and ammo.

So who wants to join me in hating Chuck? ;)

My favorite ones is 725 miles and private/family land, you can do ANYTHING you want there, but I don't get to that one as often as I'd like. :)

20 minutes to the club I belong to -- 125-outdoor rifle range, 25-yard semi-indoor pistol & rimfire range (shoot from a building at targets outside). We can shoot anything that's legal. Then it's 20 minutes in the other direction to a brand-new indoor range.

Envy Chuck? Yes.
Jealous of Chuck? Yes.
"Hate" is just facetious. Admit it, we're green over Chuck. :D
(The ;) is a big clue I know.)

To OP.

From my house to the gun club range on the side of Bays Mtn is about six miles.

The old home place on Hughes Mountain across the country road from Brown's Mountain is about a sixty mile round trip.

My son bought a forty+ acre stretch of land on Brown's Mtn just about a mile down Bear Hollow Road.

Visiting the mountain is a day trip. We did tent camp over night. But at my age future overnight stays will probably be in my son's RV camper.

There used to be an abandoned rock quarry near the river at the edge of town called Five Caves for the five openings in the main pit to a network of tunnels mined for limestone. Five Caves used to be a unofficial public shooting range. It recently has been closed and the open pit area gradually filled in with demolition rock and dirt. I guess that as the city limits expanded to the river, "they" decided it was a public nuisance.
