IWB can be quite comfortable with the right holster and belt but I've not found IWB good for magazines. So I've taken to a standard belt-loop pancake type OWB mag carrier while carrying a pistol IWB. It seems odd to me but works fine. If I need to disarm temporarily the IWB holster snap loops make this easy while retaining trigger protection. A spare mag on the other hand can stay on the belt or be secured with the pistol.

I mostly do this with my G48 + Milt Sparks Executive's Companion or a Ryan Grizzle Town and Country 2. The OWB mag carrier is from Mitch Rosen.

Anyone else do this?

I have a Concealment Express OWB mag pouch that I use for EDC. It's no bulkier than the flashlight on my other hip, and a heck of a lot more comfortable than an IWB holder! I like the CE holders because it's very easy to adjust the tension, so you can "tweak" it to just what you want to keep the mag in place (especially when you take your pants off!).

Yes, always carry my spare OWB. Unless I am tucking my holster then I'll put the spare in a pocket either loose or with a Neomag depending on if a pocket clip is out of place (pocket clips in slacks and tucked shirts are downright up class in my church).

For the mag carrier I like KyTex. Easy on, easy off, low profile for easy concealment (even with my bulky HK45 mag) and inexpensive.

Add me to the list of those who do not like carrying the handgun, and the extra mag, or mags, inside the waistband. I have done it, on occasion, but it is not comfortable, especially when I started using double-column-mag, wide-body pistols. Often, however, it has been the extra mag(s) inside the waistband, at the left and/or right AIWB position, with the primary weapon being worn OWB at 0200 to 0300.

Now that I am retired from policin’, and experimenting with different weapon options for private-citizen carry, this is subject to change, especially if a pistol that uses slim, single-column magazines becomes a normal carry weapon. One such candidate is my S&W 3913 TSW, which is quite flat, and uses very slim magazines.

I don't generally carry spare mags unless I'm going to the range, and then to keep my range bag from being cluttered, then I'll take two IWB. They're well padded and as little as $4 on Ebay. A small price to pay to try something if it works out for you. They hold my full size Beretta, Sig and Tanfo mags. Something like a wide body 1911? Maybe not.

I do it: IWB for the pistol, OWB for the mag. But I use nylon mag pouches that cover it completely -- it just looks like I'm carrying a knife.

I found an easy solution for carrying a backup magazine. I wear jeans except on rare occasions. I carry my Ruger Security 9 compact IWB in a DeSantis Slim Tuck holster. The ten round double stack backup mag fits nicely into the watch pocket of my jeans, and only the base plate is visible.

This. I’ll stick an extra magazine in my left rear pocket. No problem. No fooling with OWB pouches. I’ve been reaching for my rear pocket since before I even carried a gun. It’s in my DNA now.

Dunno how you all do that with double stack mags (I can do it with 1911 mags) and sit anywhere near comfortably. A flat knife/multitool or small flashlight I can handle but a double stack mag bugs the heck out of me.

Last year, early in the Virus mask routine that was required when entering large stores, I found an outside magazine holder with a mag inserted as a great place to hang the mask from. Just snap those elastic straps over the mag and it was available for the next use. Yes, got some strange looks at times when walking out of Meyer, but a deputy thought it was a great idea and he started to do the same.
After the mask mandates basically went away a few months ago, the mag holder is back to, just being a mag holder.:(
But single outside only for me in town, outside double when hiking; woods or desert.

When I carry IWB, which isn't that often any more, I routinely use an OWB leather mag pouch. Mine's a DeSantis and has snaps, but I rarely unsnap them. I eventually broke the snaps on my last one by doing so.

I am a strong supporter of carrying at least 1 spare magazine (2 with my 1911). All are OWB when carrying since there’s not many IWB Mag holder options out there.

I could list some for you if you are really interested, but I don't see a big advantage to an IWB pouch since they don't save you much as far as cover garments go.

Two instructor opinions:
John Correia (ActiveSelfProtection) says he has never seen a non-LEO defender need a spare mag in thousands of real life SD videos.
Tom Givens advises carrying at least one spare because that may be your fastest recovery if you have a malfunction.

Second scenario is my main reason, but the additional rounds are good to have along. Win win.

The reality is .... if you find yourself in a SD/gunfight situation, you don’t get to pick or choose the scenario. Thus there’s never a downside to more ammo.
