Got one back

Loaned a 12 gauge to my son for HD. Then 6 months later we met someplace for lunch and he was carrying a shield. he said he got it a few months ago. I asked if he still needed the shotgun. He said I guess not. Now it is back in my safe.


Kids sometimes get confused between gift and loan. Just loan them money and you will see what I mean.

I think right now there are at least three of my guns in one son's safe that are on loan. Same with tools. If I can't find it in it's storage spot, one of the boys is borrowing it.

Hopefully he took care of it while he had it.

It wasn't a loan.
My family and I were broke down in the Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon during Spring Break of 1974.
Three feet of snow.
The six of us were stuck for most of a month and we all caught pneumonia.
When we were finally able to get out of there we left everything behind - the car, the trailer and its contents.
When we went back three days later, someone had come in and stolen everything that was loose - including four rifles.
One was a Golden States Arms MAS-36 in 7.5 French.
In 2008, I dropped in to a pawn shop in Mission, Texas - and there was that old MAS-36.
I could identify it by some of the repairs that I had made to it all those years ago.
It was pretty beat.
I decided that I didn't want it back.
I found another that was in good shape a few years later.
That was good enough.

I ordered 2 commemorative engraved guns a while back. One came engraved and the other didn't. I got the non engraved one back to the gunsmith to have it done as I originally requested. 3 years later I got it back in the same condition I handed it over in, still not engraved. In the end I am glad it wasn't, made it emotionally easier to sell off.

I had a friend of mine that was renting a house with some roommates, many moons ago. Anyway, the neighborhood was, let's say in its pre-gentrificaton stage. Nice area now, but 15 years ago...not so much. He asked if he could borrow a shotgun for a few months until he got one of his own. So I lent him my old Stevens 16ga pump. Well that few months turned into the better part of a year, which that was no problem. The issue was he stored it in the garage (in Florida) in the case. Luckily, he never needed it, and no one stole it out of the garage. Unfortunately it was completely orange when I got it back. Today, it wears a really bad cold blue job and I waxed all the steel, but it lives in the safe in the a/c. She's ugly, but still one of my favorites

When I give up position of something to one of my kids I look at it mostly this way. If it is returned to me it was a loan, if it was not returned, it was a gift. That counts for money or for stuff.

I was always taught to return a borrowed item in same or better condition as it was when I borrowed it.

The little Stevens shotgun was a mess when I got it back, all clean now but, had not been cleaned in months, and had obviously been fired. Took about two hours to get it all back ship shape, full teardown, cleaning, etc.

I guess I needed to be more specific, including a cleaning kit with the shotgun when he borrowed it was not enough apparently. Oh, and he still has the kit so he could clean his pistol, I did take the time to show him how to use it and explain the need to keep his SD gun clean.

I had my Iver Johnson TP-22 stolen from the house I was renting in college.

I got it back 5 years later when the Humboldt County SD property clerk saw the guns serial had not been run through NCIC, but it was up for destruction after sitting in the property room unclaimed for two years.

She ran the number, saw that it had been reported stolen three years before it was recovered, and got it back to me after tracking me down.

Had the gun been run by the recovering deputy I would’ve gotten it back two years earlier.

I am going to be getting a first issue Glock17 back from my Dad. He asked me to loan it to him so he could carry it while fishing... then he stopped fishing so it’s just sitting in his safe.
