Dad at 86 decided to pass these on. Model 66 No Dash 4” and Colt Agent. The 66 is pristine and will sit in the safe till my son is ready. The Agent is mechanically like new but Dad painted it a few years ago. Will be my next refinish project, going to put this into the rotation.

Sorry to hear that your Dad “retired from handguns”. I am sure that was a hard decision.

Both of those revolvers are great. How will you refinish the Colt? What finish will you use?
I was looking at the new gloss duracoat but I have some good luck with spray enamel and low temp baking in projects. I just have to be careful stripping the Agent due to the aluminum frame. It’s not uncommon for them to look ratty from carrying the original finish on the frames was never very durable anyway.

Yup, those Colt factory finishes were pretty but prone to wear. My wife's Cobra has two shiny lines of aluminum where it rubbed between the car seats. You can strip most enamels off aluminum with MEK or acetone and a long soak. I wouldn't scrub or use anything more abrasive than a red Scotch-Brite pad and some Flitz. In fact, after a long soak in acetone, try rubbing any remaining paint off with a car cloth and Flitz. It will probably come up clean and you can polycoat or powder-coat pretty easily. Best of luck.

The 66 no dash supposedly had stainless steel rear sight......or so I remember, that one looks to be blued. Still an excellent gun; I have a -2 bought new back in the early 80s

Frame says, Model 66, I believe you are correct about the first ones having SS sight, I have to look at the serial number. I also have a -2 that is recessed but not pinned, another anomaly

I don't see no dash. ;)

It's possible Smith used a sight on-hand, a frame on-hand, or the sight was replaced post-ship/pre-purchase. Manufacturers assemble parts from bins, typically. I've made parts for everything from ballistic missiles to communications satellites and they always went into bins before being assembled. :D

From what I have read is later in the 66 No Dash production they went from all stainless to both the black rear/stainless front orange insert and also black rear/stainless less front no insert. This one does not have the orange insert.

Will Metalife stick to aluminum?

Most plating shops can reanodize it if you want a more original look.
Siri says, "Okay... this is what I found for, 'Will Mahovsky's Metalife stick to aluminum?' Check it out:

Mahovsky's Metalife has been in business for over 45 years. The owner, RON MAHOVSKY, offers firearm plating in the form of Metalife Hard Chrome Plating and Nickel Plating; as well as, laser engraving, customizing and gunsmithing services. Both finishes can be applied to various types of metal, including aluminum frames and magazines."

;):neener:

You could also just strip the paint and see how bad (or good) the original finish is.

I did that today, paint came off nicely, frame is basically bare. Blued steel parts are faded but look OK, gave it a first coat of enamel on the frame, left the original bluing as is, gonna do a light finish coat tomorrow and bake it. So far big improvement. Will suffice till I find a proper way of finishing it. It deserves to be carried! I will post a pic or two tomorrow.
