Sad State Of Affairs

I went to Cabela's in Green Bay, WI.
NO Primers, no powder, no ammo, & almost no guns.

If you're looking for a Ruger Wrangler, they have em.
They have 1 S&W 686 Plus PC for $1100 +.

REALLY glad I stocked up prior to the election.

Might need powder & primers by the next election ... maybe.
Cabelas is running dry, but my LGS has plenty of guns! COMPONENTS, Zero in 3 months.

Was at sportsman’s warehouse yesterday and they had probably 100 long guns and the pistol cases were almost full. They had some ammo, some powder, bmg primers, and an almost decent selection of bullets in 9, 357, 40, 45, 223, 308, and a few others. Magazines galore and priced good, and just about everything in stock in that area of the store. I didn’t need anything, but I was impressed with the selection.

My bps gets primers about once a month and are gone in a day. I've gotten some. There is rumor a few cans of powder come and I've never seen them. Quite a few guns available, and the Winchester I want is only twice what I want to pay for it.
your getting a 94? I bought a nice one at a Pawn shop for $225 about 6 years ago. Wish I never traded it but, I traded up to get a Ruger #1 45/70

I got an “in stock” notification on Weds from Sportsman’s Outdoor Superstore that they had Federal Match small pistol primers in stock. I went through the complete ordering process 3 times but couldn’t get the order through. Then I scrolled to the bottom of the page to find a note that said “Sorry, until California changes their Prop 65 laws we won’t ship anything but firearms to California.”
Sad state of affairs indeed. It’s a shame when companies use laws they are ignorant of to punish pro 2A customers.

I sent them an email telling them that I have gotten primers from other suppliers as well as other reloading components. I haven’t heard back. I probably won’t. I know they’ll never see a dime of my money ever again. I had bought things from them in the past before I moved here. I will never buy from them when I move from here in two years either.

As for reloading supplies near me there are no primers anywhere. Bullets, brass and some powders are available now.

Our Sportsman's Warehouse doesn't have much of anything. They said they have seen a primer in 6 months. No pistol ammo at all, just some .223 and other ammo that doesn't sell at the price they are asking.
They do have lead bullets for sale for a ridiculous price. I just bought 3k of 9mm plated bullets and they delivered in 5 days, and Sportsman's Warehouse is selling their lead bullets for twice the price I paid for these.
That's why they are still in stock.
I think I still have about a four year supply of components, at least. I used to work 3 miles from the shooting range, that was hard on my supplies. Now I'm working 25 miles from the range so I'm not going as often as I use to.
Can't beat planning ahead when buying components.

So wait, California has constantly changing laws around what can and cannot be bought and shipped to their residents and it's an Ohio based company's fault for not keeping up with them?

OK...

I was passing thru Springfield, MO recently and stopped in Bass Pro Shop. Asked the guy about primers and he said they get them in regularly but they let club members in 10 minutes early and they buy all they have. I’m not interested in their fashion clothing line or cooking gadgets, which appear to be the bulk of their offerings, so I’m not paying club dues to front-run everyone else. I seldom go in a BPS or Cabelas anyway. I’ve noticed over the years their hunting section keeps shrinking. (Except the branded camo stuff)
Dong’s in Tulsa has primers, but they will only sell LRP and SRP if you buy bullets. 1 for 1. I told the guy I have more than plenty 22 caliber bullets, and asked if I could buy 3 line bullets and SRP - “No! Bullets have to match the primers” Ridiculous. What difference does it make to them? They’re making a bullet sale.

That law has been on the books since 1986.
If a company doesn’t want to do business that is their business. They should be up front about it especially when one is updating their account. And what do you care? Are you affiliated with them? If so, perhaps you can get them to answer my emails. If not, what do you care what I think?

So are you saying other companies are ignoring California’s laws and are shipping you primers and powders or is the onus on California residents to not order out of state supplies. Just curious, had heard stuff like this has to go thru an FFL.
In California that is.

I don't really understand what the big deal is. Supply is wonky right now, and nothing is consistent. Sure, some companies have different policies... if you are piqued by one of them, well, this is America... you can take your business elsewhere. Not everything is as it seems, however... backorders, preorders, 'club' members, employees getting first dibs, and 50 other factors come into play... some normal, some questionable. It is what it is.

I'm discouraged... I haven't seen a can of powder on the shelf in about 2 months... but I have pretty much what I need, so I'm not hunting in earnest. Same with primers. I've actually had very good luck finding bullets... which don't seem to be that big of a problem if you aren't particularly picky. Having said that... and as I said... it is what it is.

No, I am not saying that. What I am saying is companies that can legally ship reloading supplies directly to CA customers have opted not to, either because they are ignorant of the laws or they think somehow they are making a political statement. That is their business. But if that is how they want to conduct business they should let their customers know up front and not wait until someone places an order to get a surprise notification that reads like some smart*** punk wrote.

Regarding FFL shipments, that is for loaded ammunition, not reloading supplies.

Thanks for the reply. Wasn’t sure, but I’m sure Im glad I don’t live in California. :(

This is the strange thing with this shortage, it's regional. I've had no issues finding brass and powder. Bullets were harder to locate for a little while but are now easy to get here. Primers... a few LGS had them most of the time but had limits. The big stores here haven't had primer shipments in a year.

You’re welcome. Thanks for not bashing me for living in this…place.
I seriously need my brain checked for ever moving back here. I did it for family. I leave in two years for me. If I could leave sooner I would.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Pat not sure about that particular company but many years ago a lot of vendors said that CA restricted so much crap that they would sell nothing to anybody there due to draconian laws. That included LE and other state associated customers. You may be impacted by that policy due to zip code but in this particular case I don't know but it sucks for you unfortunately. At least I would feel better if they were protesting the laws. Just sayi'n.

I live part of the year in Rhode Island, actually my home state. When the percussion cap shortage hit I tried buying caps on line and actually found some at Bass Pro Shop in Foxboro Massachusetts. I knew I couldn’t go there and by them, I’m not a Mass resident and therefore don’t have the required permit. (I know this because of an early attempt at buying round balls) The store has net ordering so tried that, No go they wouldn’t ship to the Rhode Island address.
Can’t really fault the store or it’s parent organization they are bound by the same law as citizens.

Well... I live in the Dallas area. While there are gobs of sporting good stores, there are just as many rabid shooters and reloaders. My Cabelas has ammos, depending on what you are looking for... but no powder. They had 50BMG primers... go figure. They had a fair amount of bullets. Contrast that to my LGS, who hasn't had a can of powder on the shelf for 2 months... that I've seen... and they have just a smattering of bullets and brass. Oddly enough, they had a stash of AR uppers, and lots of parts... which can be Unobtanium elsewhere. Supply... and where dealers get their supply... is an absolute crap shoot. Members here have posted pics of their LGS's full shelves... contrast that to what I've seen locally (and elsewhere, I stop in at places now and then when I travel...) And this is not to say there aren't more than a few 'poachers'... those who just buy anything and try to resell it, they are probably just as responsible for empty shelves than the end users themselves.

Your also writing off bass pro because sportsmans is now a Jonny Morris company. That basically leaves you turners in California and maybe an LGS.
