The 1911's biggest problem was it had a good snake oil salesman convince everyone it was "the one", and the believers caused a demand that Colt couldn't meet (and wasn't really even right as it was), and lesser makers started filling the gaps, and screwed the pooch for the most part.
Like a good dog breed that becomes popular, that popularity is usually its downfall. All of a sudden, everyone and their brother think they are dog breeders, and you have problems. And that's exactly what happened to the 1911.
A proper 1911 is a good gun, but it also is what it is, and there are better things available to us these days. Even Browning thought he could do better, even if he never got to see what came of that. And even then, that gun, the HP, more or less started the next revolution.
I carried a 1911 on a daily basis longer than anything else Ive carried over the years. Got tired towards the end of trying to get what I needed, right out of the box at a reasonable price. Even Colt started doing stupid stuff. Every Glock or SIG Ive owned, worked right out of the box. Cant say that for most of the 1911's Ive owned.
