The Future?

Well, "joules of force" put me off, but I'm used to unit mixups like energy and power.

Sort of like the "loan" and "lend " mixup. You live with it.

Anyhow, looks interesting and it looks like the "new" is processor control of the magnetic coil impulse sequencing and of course, the Li batteries, which are amazing to this lead-acid and carbon-zinc battery old guy. The Navy rail gun, as I understood it, did not depend on magnetic properties of the projectile, but on the electrical conductivity of the projectile or its sabot which acted like the armature of a DC motor... am I right there? Been a while.

I'm kind of used to high power electrical stuff since I've built photo studio xenon flash units for myself and a fellow photographer. Nowadays, it's hard to find high voltage stuff except in abandoned TV sets and microawve ovens in alleys. Which I did.

Of late, the only experimenting I've done was with a 25-turn coil on a spool placed flat on a table with one of those small neo magnets in the center, and pop the coil with a 12V motorcycle battery. The magnet makes a satifsying one-foot leap straight up.

The Gauss gun? I won't exclude sudden and unforeseen leaps in technology to make this a bit more practical and compact and if I had some loose coin around I'd probably invest in the company just for my interest in such things. Sort of like "hit me" with 20 points worth of cards in your hand.... hey, being dealt an ace is always possible. It's not gambling, it's not investing, it's adventure.

Oh, and sticks and rocks might be used in WWn, but we'd have devolved to teeth and nails for WWn+1

Magic 8 ball says...;)

BTW, that thing has only a bit more muzzle energy than a .22 air gun (and considerably less than a .22lr pistol). Interesting as a ... toy, plinker, ???, but at $3,000 and no mention of what it is using for projectiles (and their cost) I'd put the money into a small game hunting European air rifle that I could cast my own projectiles for and pump up a tank for.

The future, a very distant future. One in which wars will be won with the first “Ouchie”.

Purple Hearts awarded to Combat Bruises.

Every time an appliance is plugged in Useless Uncle Loren will have flashbacks from seeing one of his brothers fall, after tripping over some cables, spraining an ankle and breaking his rifle. Never to be recharged…

The old soldiers no longer deride the young guns for how easy they have it. China’s Corona 30 has capped human life to around fourty five years of age. No one remembers how the first wars were done. No one but the Controllers, and they never speak. The rules are always written, broadcast on the Issues channel…

Man, I had to think up something! That article reads like like an advertisement for mud. 200fps?
1/2” projectiles? Don’t they mean 50 caliber?
Why didn’t they try to replicate the only cartridge that has vast worldwide recognition? The 22 rimfire?

Be still my heart. I know this is fledgling technology, but they need to be a little more spectacular than a Nerf gun before they start “taking orders”.

Luckily, just like a Nerf gun, the projectiles will be reusable, since they won’t go fast enough to be damaged, nor far enough to be lost. (As long as one looks under the couch.;))

I applaud their efforts and appreciate the challenge it is to accomplish what we’d like to see I this field of work. But this is not a “we did it!” moment.:D

WW3 MAY be fought with Gauss rifles and lasers.

WW4 WILL be fought with clubs and spears.

You would really like a book called "The Sling and the Stone" by Col Thomas Hammes. The title references how a future war will be fought based on current insurgency wars of today.

A few centuries ago, it was all about the bow and arrow. Countries and nation states spent the better part of 2000 years trying to find the most lethal wood and string combinations to enhance the power and range of arrows. When gunpowder was invented in China, it started a new clock. I don't think we will have man portable magnetic gauss rifles in my lifetime. Arnold dual wielding EM-1 railguns in "Eraser" was as far fetched then as now.

What do y'all think?
Well, the GyroJet was going to revolutionize the gun biz, too. The Dardick Tround, too.

Until battery tech improves power density per mass & volume by near 10x, the power available for coilacc, or lineacc, tech is strictly limited. (There's another limitation, the acceleration available is middling staggering, and keepign the projectile together is an issue.)

The potential is there, no doubt. Power is the limiting factor, but at the rate battery tech is advancing, I can see this becoming a workable thing, in my lifetime, and I'm 48.

Military applications will come first. You can bet your butt DARPA already has something along these lines produced. At the right time, it will be revealed, just like stealth tech was.

The civie version will come shortly after...UNLESS certain anti 2nd Amendment people throw wrenches into the works, which is likely...but alas..not the place to discuss that topic.

Either way...I think its neato!

Pretty neat. All about the power generation. Eventually it’ll probably get there with the advance of technology. I like that that I don’t believe it’s technically a “firearm” under existing laws. Nice.

20 pounds? More powerful than a speeding...air gun pellet!!! Looks like.... :barf: never mind. I wouldn't give a wooden nickel for that abomination.

Arcflash's rifle measures 38 inches in length with a barrel length of 26 inches, weighs 20 pounds, and is powered by a 25.2-volt lithium-ion polymer battery (LiPoly) battery.

That would be a deal breaker. Over the past 25 maybe 30 years this comes up every now and then. At 71 I doubt I will see a practical working version in my lifetime. The US Navy seems to be doing well with Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch Systems on the bright side. :)

But - The existing technology has been honed to such a fine degree…

This , to me , is a clear example of fixing something that ain’t broke!

All of us know about tomorrow only upon it’s arrival; prior to it’s arrival, all of us are guessing.

You know I have buckets full of fodder that is pretty old, stored properly i can grab a box or two load it up and it goes bang! Everytime......i doesn't have to be recharged or worry about loose wires in the host weapon......all my weapons are under 8lbs, most way under....I understand their curiosity but they have a looong way to go replacing current technology.......ship or vehicle mounted units have shown lots of promise so far but we're a long way from Ripley and her alien killin pulse rifle!

For what purpose? Will it come with a car charger? Field charging stations or optional solar attachment?
For the weight, I could carry a hell of a lot of marbles for my slingshot. Higher velocity and aerodynamically superior to what they have there...and it'll work on cloudy days or during power outages. You know, if actual firearms ever become obsolete.

Like it or not, the past is our future
