For home defense, I have heard conflicting reports on the efficacy of #4 buckshot loads. I am asking because I live in an apartment at the moment and the risk of overpenetration is a very real concern.
I am reading some claim it isn’t up to the job and is more of a varmint load, yet I came across this on another board:
So there’s that supposedly.
What do you all think about the topic? Is #4 an effective load for home defense? Why or why not?

#4 buckshot was used by the US Navy.
The Navy SEALS used it heavily in Vietnam.
In his book "Point man" multiple Vietnam tour and founding member of the SEALs, Chief James "Patches" Watson went into some detail about his Ithaca Model 37 that the Naval Weapons Lab at China Lake built for him.
He used #4 buck, and when asked if that wasn't a little light, he responded that "No one he ever shot complained about it".
So there’s that supposedly.
