OK - help me out please

At first I thought this would be an easy choice, but I just can't decide. Today I decided that it was time to replace my carry gun. So, I promised my wife I'd sell a gun to fund it. My long time carry gun has been the original p365. Mainly because I wanted to mount a red dot, I decided to replace it with the p365X. I know - not too much different. But I can mount a red dot and I have 12 rounds in a flush mag. Less than a year ago, I bought a Hellcat for the specific purpose of learning about red dot optics on pistols. The red dot I bought for the Hellcat fit's on the p365X, so I installed it today. The fact is, I really don't like the Hellcat as much as the 365 and I have kept it mainly because I wanted a gun with a red dot. But now I don't really need it for that purpose.

So, I am going to sell the Hellcat or the P365. Originally I felt the logical choice was the 365 since the 365X is nearly the same thing and I will no longer use it for carry. But on the other other hand, I like the 365 better than the Hellcat. Then again, I like having guns of different manufacturers just for the choice and the learning.

So it's a real 1st world kind of dilemma here :). But I wouldn't mind hearing your opinions.

Sell them both. You have a new pistol to fill that niche.

The only good reasons I can see for not selling both are:
  1. Your wife doesn't have a carry gun, but you're hoping she might change her perspective on that.
  2. You would like a spare gun Incase the P365XL should become unusable/unavailable, and you don't have another pistol that could fill that spot if needed.
If you're going to keep one, it seems smart to keep the slightly smaller version of your new carry pistol. Ergonomics and trigger should be similar. Mags are interchangeable (mostly). Send that Hellcat down the road.

Keep both and buy the new one. I’ve certainly never sold a firearm I traded one for 3 last year mainly because my ffl friend wanted his old rifle back.

Get a grip man!

Got to go with the flow on this one and say sell the Hellcat and keep the P365 as a back-up. Same gun commonality of magazines, parts, etc. along with the same operational design, make the most sense to me.

I have two of basically the same gun for my carry purposes. I always have the same basic platform in case one breaks or I need to scavenge a part. I say keep that P365. I actually got rid of my P365 last week as I never carried it.

Keep the p365 and the p365x. You'll be able to compare dot to no dot side by side at the range. If anyone ever asks "does the dot really make a difference" You'll have the perfect set of dueling pistols.

You already carry and like it, why would you sell it over the hellcat you don't like? Selling a gun you like is crazy IMO, even guns you don't like you might come to find you miss having, but especially ones you DO like.

If I buy a gun and decide I don't like it it gets traded or sold. If I were in your shoes I would sell both. Why have two 365s, one of which you aren't going to use? Look at it this way, sell two and buy the 365 you want and another something you would like to have with no complaint from your war department.

Sell the hellcat. You have magazine compatibility with the 365s and you like it better.
Easy

Looks like you all are unanimous on selling the Hellcat. Hard to argue with the logic. I've never sold a gun before, so that will be the next thing to figure out.

Looks like you're from Pennsylvania.

I haven't lived there for 3 years, but the laws were always that long guns can be sold face-to-face with any private sale.

But with a handgun, you have to go through an FFL to have it "transferred". Normally, a shop transfer fee is $10-50. So when you list your gun for sale, when you price out, know that you'll have to price it in relation to the fee.

When I lived in PA, handgun sales sucked because normally the cost of the transfer fee made it worthwhile for a buyer to just buy new as I wasn't asking expensive guns as a broke kid. Normally I would trade them in at shops I knew well where I would get a fair price.

Armslist used to be what I use. I think that site no longer works or you have to pay or something.

I think there is Penns woods or Rennug that you can use as an online classified

Just my 2 cents. If I sell a gun, it goes through an FFL. In MN we don't have to with rifles, but there is some legal liability if you sell a gun to someone who is ineligible, even if unknowingly, and god forbid it is used in a crime. Also in MN, there are some notification requirements or permit requirements if a pistol or "scary" style rifle is involved (don't know about PA). Seems cheap insurance to have an FFL complete the background and do the transfer. For me, that adds $20 to the sale and is worth the peace of mind.

As I understand it, handguns transferred out of state HAVE to go to an FFL in the state it is transferred. It can be shipped from an individual TO the FFL in the state the final buyer lives in, but there are logistical issues with that. It is illegal for a non FFL to ship a handgun (not a rifle) through the USPS, so that option doesn't exist for non FFL's. Non FFL's can ship through a common carrier to an FFL IF their policy allows it. Here's where I'm not sure, but I think FedEx won't ship a handgun from a non FFL per policy (not law). I believe UPS will ship from a non FFL to an FFL, but UPS policy is overnight air for handguns...so it's expensive.

In the end, I would just have a local FFL ship it to the buyer and figure that into your cost or lost revenue or sell local through an FFL (my opinion).

If anyone knows of a more economical and legal way to ship and sell a handgun out of state, I'd be interested in seeing options.

(Any FFL's, if I misstated anything, let me know and I will edit).

Oh, and to answer the OP...sell the gun you don't like. Keep them all if money isn't an issue, but I know for me money usually is an issue, so again I would sell the gun you don't like to afford the one you do.

I don't sell guns privately because none of the people I know are interested n my guns. Selling to a shop or chain store is easy. Just clean the gun up, look up online costs to get an idea on value and be ready to haggle. Trading to a shop for another purchase usually gets you a bit better return.

I would keep the P365 so the next time you find a gun you like you have something to sell to please the wife.
If you sell both now, you lose that bargaining power with the missus.
