A lot of that going around right now. I wanted to go out yesterday, but it was already way over 90° and heading to 102°. That's Texas in the Summer; is what it is.

Which optic is that?

Just a cheap ass red dot , nothing special at all , had it sitting in a cabinet and threw it on just to have something. I like to shoot for accuracy , so I'll end up putting a scope on it.

Welcome the Dark (as in black phosphate and anodizing) Side!

I was late to the .223/ AR game too as I was raised on the "If it ain't ought-six, it ain't%#@#" mantra. Now that I realize the basic goodness (and limitations) of the platform and cartridge Im all in.

Now, you just need an AR9 for cheap training, and a AR .22 for the kiddies, and an AR10 for big game, and a 300BLK for a can, and a lightweight SHTF build, and a retro-replica M16A2, and a 6.5 for the 1000yd range, and a..........:D

Check, check, check, check, check and check... I think

Buy the best magazines to feed it from.

You will want a dozen PMAG M3 or Lancer magazines.

Take a carbine course. Better than the typical waste of money on stuff to hang off the gun we all did starting out.

There's another post here about magazines, but USGI mags work just fine.
My first AR, after the one the Gummint loaned me in 1970, was put together of NOS Colt parts and a NoDakSpud lower. This was after the ban sunsetted;had an M16A1 replica. I've since picked up a Brownells 16" Carbine upper with full length handguards.
I never had to run thru' the jungle with mine, but I was still a much younger man, the last time handling an M16. It shook me up for a minutes; can't imagine how handling one now would affect a 'Nam vet.
Yeah, it's a great rifle, with a long run as our era's Brown Bess musket.

The thing with ARs is there's so many different flavors, it can be hard to pick which one to enter the game with. For me I only really preferred the old school military config, so thats still my favorite. Plus there's a caliber for basically anyone. Including a 30-06 one that some company makes believe it or not. You can really chamber an AR into anything.
It's America's gift to the world

War, war never changes. I used to patrol the Mojave, until i took an arrow to the knee! Now i just hang out in Primm at the Vickie and Vance drowning my sorrows with swill.

The adaptability of the AR is its biggest positive feature. Imho

My friend has the same .22 Cap, he let my son shoot it. Of course, the old man's Ruger 10/22 isn't cool enough now! o_O

Yeah, a dedicated one is very nice . . .

I built this one from parts leftover from other builds. Vintage Colt .22 conversion bolt and mags, AR 9 upper, Anderson lower, PSA stainless 18" barrel. Runs great and accuracy is surprisingly good given the 1:7 twist. Im adding pink furniture now since it is going to my Granddaughter soon.:)

The addiction starts when you start assembling your own.

Modifying the one you have is the gateway to the addiction. In my case it was try a couple different triggers, a couple different optics, change the BCG, the handguard, add a sling and a bi-pod. Before long you realize you can easily build one.

The adaptability of the AR is its biggest positive feature. Imho

I agree. I doubt if anyone keeps them the way they bought them. Even those who build one sometimes go back and change something. The huge aftermarket support allows you to customize to your heart's content.
