Could use some advice about S&W 15-2 purchase

A little background first.

I have had a good neighbor for the last 22 years. Two summers ago, he asked me to babysit his "handful" of pistols while on vacation (meaning, to keep them at my house) because his daughter and grandchild would be at his house during that time. I said, "Sure!".

Amongst them was a S&W 15-2. Pinned, 4-inch tapered barrel, very good condition. Looks to be original. I fondled it a little bit and took note of the quality. The single action trigger was, IMO, very darned crisp and light. Some Googling indicated that the serial number was circa 1963.

I don't really have any handguns that look, feel, and work like that S&W 15 outside of an old Baer .45. Keep in mind that I had no interest in revolvers at the time, and knew nothing about them.

Later I commented on the pistol and he told me that it was his fathers, and that pop bought it in the early 60s. Then, he asked me if I wanted to buy it. I said that I would, eventually.

As it happens, I've vowed to be "all revolver" for year 2023 and am finally interested in the model 15. My neighbor is not a gun guy. I don't know what it's worth. He doesn't want or need it and I don't want to cheat him.

Any guesses about it's value? My LGS (whom I almost trust) said, "between 5 and 6 hundred".

I'd guess blueing is over 95%. I could detect no obvious signs of Bubba work, and the bottom line is that I trust him. I'll bet that pistol is exactly the way it was when it left S&W, and probably has seen less than a box or two of .38s.

Any advice?

That sounds reasonable to me. I got a very clean 15-3 last year for around that price.
Offer him 500.00, it will be a win on both sides of the deal.

Thanks. With what the modern plastic crap costs these days, I had a hard time believing that a tight piece of clockwork (like his 15) could possibly be worth less.

I've never done any real target shooting. My plan is to start a bit with the 15.

I'd tell him that to the best of my knowledge it's worth $500-$600, and offer him $600.

It's more important to be a good neighbor and friend than it is to save $100.

If he replies that $500 would be fine, you learned something nice about him. :)

"Your merchandise. your price." If I am selling something, I think I am obligated to state a price. Ask him what he wants for it. If it's less than 500-600, you can be the good guy and pay him our consensus. If he wants an outlandish amount, then you can negotiate. Point is, in my opinion pricing is his obligation.

Pull out $$500 from the bank, wave $400 at him and ask if he wants to sell it. If he says "more" , then pull the remaining $100 out of your wallet and truthfully say " this is my budget for it" . Use the extra $50 suggested above to try to find a box of ammo for it. Hey those prices people been throwing out here are gunstore/ show prices. Not what things go for face to face. Gunstore prices or GunBroker ECT.include alot extra costs.

Buy it. If you're a gun guy you'll love it. Hard to beat a K frame S&W and I love the older all steel firearms. Yeah I'm a old codger that feels like plastic/polymers don't belong in firearms (not in MY firearms anyways)

There are some factors to be considered. Original grips or replacement Pachmayrs? You wrote that it is like it left the factory, so I assume that it has the original grips. What about the box and cleaning kit? They add $100 to any serious collector.

It is funny on gun forums - and now it arrived here, too. If a forum member asks to buy a gun, then the other members calculate 2+2 and they come up with 3. When you ask what you can sell it for, they calculate 2+2 and side with you as well, they are coming up with 5.

A S&W 15, let's say that it is P&R, and really shot that little should easily fetch $600 if it is offered to a larger group of buyers.

The grips looked to be original. Certainly wood with the logo...but it's been a while since I've seen it. I don't think he has the box or cleaning kit.

It sounds like $550 is a fair offer. I appreciate all the info. Once I get my hands on it I'll post a pic or two.

I think that $550 is a fair price for both sides. Friendship and trust also have a value!
