S & W Model 25 in 45 Colt

I’ve seen these a time or two lately and was curious about them. They’re the only dedicated 45 Colt in a double action I know of.

My Model 1989 S&W M25-7 was the first Smith 45 LC that I owned that the cylinder mouths were 0.452 inch

25 March 1991 Talk with Doug Brassard S&W Customer Service

SAAMMI allows a rear diameter of .4862 nominal plus .004 and .4806 plus .004 for front of the 45 Colt chamber. When I asked him about the 45 Colt ball chamber throat diameters he said that they used to be .4545 to .4565 but now they were .452 . Smith and Wesson has its own standards for the barrel dimensions for the 45 Colt and they are : one turn in 20, 5 groove, lands .444 -0.0 + .0012, groove .451 - 0.0 + .0017. For the 45 ACP it is a 6 groove barrel, 1 turn in 15 inches, lands of .443 -0.0 +.0012 and grooves of .450 -0.0 and +.0017. Interestingly enough the SAAMMI specifications for 45 ACP lead bullets and jacketed bullets are different. Jacketed specs are .452 -.003 and lead bullets .453 -.003.

Older S&W M25's in 45 LC will lead with 0.452 cast bullets, and are not that accurate with that bullet. However if commercial cast 0.454" diameter bullets are used, leading is greatly reduced and accuracy is improved. The absolute best load I used was a 250 to 255 lead with 8.5 to 9.0 grains Unique. This was powerful and accurate out to 50 yards, which is the furthest I shoot handguns. Fifty yards is a long way to shoot a handgun offhand.

As long as the owner does not try to turn the pistol into a magnum, a S&W N frame in 45LC is a great pistol, not too heavy, recoil is not punishing, muzzle blast not horrible. The big bullet hit hard on my gong targets, lots of ping to tell I had hit. I did find some balloon head cases, several of which the heads pulled off sizing them. I have not as yet loaded black powder in the things, but I am still curious if 40 grs of black will fit inside, and whether the bullet will be moving faster than my smokeless loads.

I believe Charter Arms use to make the Bulldog XL in .45 Colt but can't find any in stock online. Possibly it was discontinued by Charter Arms.

Ive always got an eye out for a 4" 25 in 45Colt. Had a couple of 29's like that, but always wanted one in 45.

I did pick up a 4" 625 in 45acp a couple of years back, and its a shooter. Just not 45 Colt. The moon clips are nice though. :)

I saw one of the 5” 625’s in .45 ACP last year on the consignment list down here in So Cal for $1,500.
Sold in one day!

Stay safe.

I just picked this one up a bit ago. There is another one for sale locally too that I may be tempted into.

I have an S&W model 25-15 that I like very much. It’s very accurate and such a pleasure to shoot. I bought it 2 years ago in CA when all guns were scarce. It has a small blemish in the bluing that I was going to have S&W fix but then I figured somehow the gun wouldn’t come back as accurate so I decided to leave it alone.

Here it is with my 2 Vaqueros, both .45 Colt. I have a .45 ACP for the New Vaquero. 3CC667C7-CFD6-495F-B444-7830F3397FB2.jpeg

And I just like this photo of my 25-15

An M-25 [along with an M-10 and FA-83] is probably my favorite revolver.
It is comfortable for my hand and sights are good for the getting older eyes -
so I shoot it well. The cartridge is an adequate power level for most everything I hunt.
There is a nice selection of bullets for handloading, Hard to go wrong with such a combination.
