But only if you can find 9mm in those Wally world prices....can be tricky these days.

I think that an SKS would fit your needs.

The SKS rifle and 7.62x39 round have increased considerably in price and been harder to find with the recent ammo buying craze.

The Mosin Nagant (91, 91/30, M-38 and M-44) all remain inexpensive and readily available. Surplus 7.62x54R ammo is often cheaper than 9mm, much cheaper than x39, and easy to find. Corrosive com-bloc ammo is great for busting rocks, with ballistic tipped, soft point, AP, tracer, and just about every other round you can imagine available as well.

The 5.45x39 round is considerably cheaper than the 5.56x45 (which it is often compared to) but the platform to shoot it is a lot higher. An AK-74 will probably run you at least $600, whereas Mosins can be had for around $100 depending on model and condition.

9mm drop in barrel ($100) optional [works best with +p ammo so reloading is the way to go]

Good luck. Even Wolf crap ammo is exceeding those prices these days. Unless you can find it at WalMart, the least expensive prices I have been seeing have been around $15 for "standard" FMJ brass cased ammo. That was at Cabela's, and stock is spotty.

Its hard, but not impossible. One of my Walmarts had 8 boxes in the case last night, and I bought 6(which is the most they allow at the moment).

No offense, but do you really want to trust your life to the Cheapest Gun/Ammo Combination?

-Past that, shotgun is fun to shoot and cheap enough.

+1 for the Mosin. I can't think of a better power/price/fun ratio. I even enjoy shooting my M-38 more than my AMD 65. Cheap surplus ammo is plentiful, too. I'd pick it over lots of other options, even if I had the money.

I'll give a +1 for the Mosin here, even though I've only shot a few and don't own one. The ammo is cheap for it, and not as crappy as the leftover stuff for Mausers. The gun itself is inexpensive, accurate, and 400+ rounds can be purchased for around $100.

-edit- I just contemplated picking up one when I get my paycheck next week. I make around $200 a week and part of that goes to food. If this wasn't a cheap gun/ammo combo, I wouldn't have even given it a thought.

I'm going to disagree slightly with the Mosin. Yes, they're cheap. Yes, ammo is cheap. And yes they're fun to shoot. But for me, they're not fun to shoot more than a few clips. After 5-10 rounds, I'm done.

Another Mosin vote here. I put 60-80 rounds downrange every range trip. 60 rounds works out to about 15 bucks after shipping. I couldn't imagine doing that with any other high power rifle (.270 is $14/20 for the cheap Federal and .308 seems to be all over $20/20!)

Also, while they are a tad inaccurate, a few bucks for a scout scope or a new set of iron sights takes most of that problem away. I average 4-6" with the issued iron sights and 2"-2.5" with the scout scope and surplus ammo at 100yds. Still have the trigger from heck though. Heavier than the double action on a S&W revo.

The best you could do IMO is get one of the standards .243, .270, 30-30, 30-06. These will always have production ammo you can find and are readily available in almost every format you can imagine. 30-06 is generally seen as the do all hunting rifle in North America.
I agree that mil surp like the M44 or 91/30 Mossin Nagant might be the way to go as both can be had for dirt cheap (usually $100) and ammo is usually descent. I personally have a 91/30 and something like 880 rds lying around here somewhere.

You can't beat a 91/30 in this department.

While it isn't a rifle, honorable mention goes to the NEF single-shot shotgun. They're rampant in pawn shops, and the gun, 100 rounds of 12 or 20 gauge, a box of clays, and a hand thrower can set you back as little as $100, and that's a LOT of fun.

Also, even during the height of the recent run on guns and ammo, one could stop by Wal-Mart ont he way to the range and get at least a few hundred rounds of 12/20 gauge (as well as the clays and thrower).
