I dont know much about this round, but when fired from a mokarov type pistol, does the 9x18 have enough "umph" to make good use of HPs or stay with FMJ to ensure good penetration?

The 9x18 makarov definitely has enough power to make use of hollow points. I normally use hornady defensive rounds. But I also use silver bear hollow points. The 9mm makarov caliber is hotter than a 380 and on the low end of 9mm luger. And both those rounds are considered good with hollow point bullets. And both are considered good defensive calibers. Personally, my 9mm makarov chambered CZ-82 is my primary carry weapon. And anyone that says a 9mm, 380, 9mm mak, or 32 isn't sufficient for self defense purposes, is ignorant and just spouting internet rhetoric. I've spoken with Buffalo Bore, and they have plans of making a hot 9mm makarov round. Hopefully soon.

My primary carry gun is P-64 in 9x18 and I am a big advocate of the round. I wouldn't have normally believed what it is capable of unless I saw it for myself. A friend of mine took a nice size wild hog with a 9x18 fmj. If someone had told me that somewhere else, I would have been skeptical to say the least. But I actually saw this, so I know what the 9x18 is capable.

I love it when people say even the 9mm luger is too weak. They refuse to admit that a person can be shot by a 44 magnum and still not die; or be shot with a 22lr and die instantly.

I watched one of the "Tactical" shows on "The Outdoor Channel" last night on tv. They were showing people in a home who might hide behind things as cover. Both the victim/home owner as well as the bad guy. They experimented with a refrigerator outside, door off, gallon jugs of water on the top shelf, and a backstop/target on the side of it about 5 feet away. They stood about 15 feet away from the "SIDE" of the refrigerator and shot a 9mm hollow point through it. Went through the left side; punched through gallon jug of water; went through the right side; and went through the target/backdrop. That's a 9mm HP. They also tested with a 40sw, 38spl, .223, and 12 gauge. So, anyone who says a 9mm is weak, is ignorant and doesn't know that ALL hand guns are inefficient and are a compromise because you can't walk around with a rifle or shotgun all day. And as a compromise, SHOT PLACEMENT is everything. The 9mm makarov is an excellent caliber. So is the 380 and 32acp. As well as above. Learn how to shoot. How to keep composure. And the gun will work just fine for you.

When I carried a Mak as my CCW, I carried the wolf black box 100gr FMJ 9x18 loading. With marginal calibers like 9x18 and .380 I would opt to penetration over expansion.

SHOT PLACEMENT is everything

+1 on this!
