Buying a handgun in Ohio

I have a question for some of you experts out there. I recently moved to NE Ohio in October from W. Michigan. I still have a Michigan drivers license, but by definition aren't I an Ohio resident? Does paying taxes and having a full time job make me a resident and enable me to purchase a handgun here? I know 3 years ago when I was in school here I was albe to purchase a rifle here, but I know that's a different story. If it does, would I be required to bring a copy of my lease/pay stub/utility bill to prove my residency? Thoughts? Thanks
 
I think you need to change your credentials to reflect your new address. IE you need a state of Ohio ID. However I think you can use a FFL in MI to handle the transfer for your MI address. If you get a FFL in Ohio to ship to a FFL in MI you should be able to complete the transfer but since that isn't really where you reside you open a new can of worms.

Just transfer all your credentials to OH and make things easier. For lack of a better term to make things legaler.

I am planning on doing this in the near future, but am I reading it right that by definition I am an Ohio resident? I have a full time job, a lease, pay taxes, pay bills, and my mailing address for everything including my bank accounts is in the state of Ohio. I had just payed to renew my license and truck registration before I moved and I was hoping to hunt one more season in Michigan before I have to pay non-resident prices, so I was hoping I could wait a little bit longer before I switched it all over to Ohio. I left my handguns in Michigan, as I was unsure about bringing them to another state. I have recently been getting the itch to shoot and have found a few pistols that peak my interest. I do not have time to make a trip back to MI, and won't until this summer. What about FTF sales?
 
I can't find a link that states the time frame Ohio expects a new resident to get an Ohio license, here's a link to the BMV's website:

It states they expect a new resident to obtain an Ohio license, and register any vehicle as soon as possible.

As to a FTF sale of a firearm, it would depend on the attitude of the seller towards transfer to a buyer who didn't have a picture ID showing them as an Ohio resident. But I doubt seriously you'll find an FFL willing to sell you a gun with a non-resident ID without it being transferred to the state you have a valid picture ID from, adding transfer fees to the purchase price.
 
^ Especially a Michigan resident, due to Michigans laws.

You may be tested..... You'll need to answer this without hesitation (Think Football)

If you can't remember "IO", just yell out "GO BUCKS!" Or "Michigan Sucks" works equally as well. Some tester may even accept "GO BLOW" as an alternative. Or sing the song "I Don't Give A Damn About the Whole State Of Michigan", usually just singing the refrain will be sufficient.
 
I think you might be able to. There is a chart I saw in a shop somewhere that showed which states the dealer was allowed to accept ID's from. Obviously, CA and a couple others weren't allowed. I don't know about MI. Bring a utility bill along and give it a shot. The worst they could do is say no.

Take it from a former Michigan resident, now Ohio resident, you need a valid Ohio license. The good news is it is much easier to get than a Michigan license. Go take the test and they issue the license that day. No sweat. Also, no waiting period in Ohio. You walk out that day with your new 'toy'.

No problem bringing your handguns to Ohio. Taking handguns from Ohio to Michigan for the long hall, that is another story. You are supposed to register them in Michigan.
 
Welcome to the Almost Free World of Ohio, this is not the socialist state of michigan where it is illegal to possess a handgun without a piece of paper from your county sheriff. Bring your handguns from michigan, there is no registration requirement. You will need a drivers license from ohio for any purchases.
 
Haha some of you guys kill me. It never gets old down here. Not only do I think football is boring (sorry I'm a rugby player), but I may hate the Skunk Bears more than you Buckeyes do(Michigan State/ND fan). I have to admit sometimes I root for UM during the big game just to stir it up a bit here in Ohio.

The reason I didn't bring my pistols is I moved to Shaker Heights and I had read some BS about their handgun friendly police
I called a Gander Mtn. where I bought a rifle a few years ago with a Michigan ID and the gentleman stated that to buy any gun in Ohio you must have an Ohio ID, which I know is false http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/OHSL.pdf I even stated that they sold me a gun a few years ago and he said they shouldn't have. The reason, I believe, that they allow this for longguns but not handguns is because of federal law that prohibits the sale of handguns intended to cross into another state. But, technically I am a resident. But, I guess i should just bite the bullet(no pun intended) and find a license bureau and get switched over.
 
^^^^NOBODY will admit to being a UM fan right now :D

I had a relative play college sports at State and he also believes the bigger rivalry up there is State vs UM.

Notice how I skillfully alluded to the State up North 6 times here without having to type it..... :evil: I grew up in Northwest Ohio and worked in Toledo & Sometimes accross the State line and there were more UM fans than OSU fans. Those were the Cooper Years. I lost a lot of money and took a lot of greif for it. ;)
