I have no opinion, as I have never tried it.

But, it has been my experience that the only way to make a .22 more accurate with ammo, is by buying a box of every kind of ammo you can find, and testing them all in your rifle.
One or two, or more if you are real lucky, will shoot much smaller groups then the others.

Once you find that one brand that shoots best, go back and buy all you can get with the same lot number.

And heres another tip.
It most likely will not be bulk-pack stuff from Wallmart.

With all that said, getting a .22LR to shoot as well as a .17 Hummer is going to be very hard to do.

The .17 is using very good jacketed V-Max bullets from Hornady.
And no .22LR uses jacketed bullets.

BTW: This months Rifle magazine on sale on newsstands now has an artical by Charles Petty testing 51 different brands & types of .22LR ammo.
He used a Model 52 Winchester Match rifle & 10x Unertl Target scope.

At 50 yards, the best ammo tested (Eley Tenex) shot an average of five 5-shot groups into .204".
(Best = .084" worst = .389")

The worst ammo (Aguila Standard) shot .793".
(Best = .697" Worst = .985")

Well that goes to show the proverb "Its the Indian and not the arrow".
But i can say my groups on the same target at the same distance looked completely different between the 2 guns.
Im not great shot, I also haven't bought bipods and was shooting off my elbow on a bench since i was just so happy to be shooting i forgot to use my pistol case as a rest.
Both guns need bipods as i shoot off a rest 95% of the time.

I dont hunt but i will be doing some varmint snipeing and it would be fun to use my .22lr also. You gotta admit any hollow point on a bulk round is just an oddly shaped hole that i would bet money does nothing to help expansion.

I should clear this up a little, Im not trying to make the .22lr anything as accurate as the .17hmr
Id just like my bulk ammo that i buy make groups that don't resemble a shotgun hit with #1 shot.

Maybe i should rephrase my question. Does anyone feel this tool would be a waste of time on bulk ammo? I have time on my hands so thats no problem.

Well, why don't you try it and report back to us.

This is a very uncommon tool. It's not too expensive, maybe you'll be the first to test it and give us a fair review.

Personal thought about it:
I sorta think that deforming the bullet nose while it's still in the brass case will end up distorting other things. You'll accomplish the stated goal of making a hollow point or swc, but might likely ruin accuracy during the process. But until you try it, you'll never know.

I'll take that bet and raise you $5!

Go out and shoot some live game like rabbits or squirrels and report back.

Does anyone have this type of system for a progressive press? Doing .22 one at a time would be get pretty tiresome (especially when I shoot several hundred at a time).....however if someone could make a setup to run them through a Dillon of L-N-L now were talking.....you could make 500 in no time and then I might be interested. There is an idea for all you aspiring entrepreneurs.

How do you guys feel about these? Im more interested in the accuracy gains as i have a .17hmr if i want to shoot varmints but the hollow point and reshaping would be fun tho.
After shooting the HMR my .22's seem like they could use a boost.

I don't have -that- tool, but I do have an earlier version of Paco Kelly's tool.

The re-sized 22lr as a wad cutter were a -little- more accurate, with fewer fliers, than my control group. But .. one rifle liked one size, another liked another size, and a 3rd showed no effect at all. I was shooting from sandbags, and not a full "lock down" vice.

If nothing else, the 22lrs turned into wad cutters did cut a hole that was a lot easier to see with a spotter scope.

The "opened up" hollow points also -seemed- to be more effective, when shot into a newspaper/water mush mixture. By more effective I mean they opened up more. than the untreated rounds.

I also would like to try filling those opened up HP's with something like rubber cement, but didn't get that far.

Bottom line is I believe that you will get an improvement, on some rifles. No way to tell which ones, or how much, or what size to shoot for w/o experimentation.

I mainly said that as the HP's i see in the 500 bulk packs are half misshaped and filled with filings. If i was to hunt with a .22lr HP id hand pick and reshape the end myself.
But with a proper setup to get it aligned correctly, just like this tool does.

Anyhow, Its some interesting stuff to read about these and possibly try them. I shoot two .22lr's one a rifle and a pistol. But i feel like im lobbing fast rocks at targets after i shoot my .17hmr and then pick up a .22lr
Its the nature of the cheap ammo i know, But as i said i have alot of spare time and a nice desktop vice the rig would fit in.

I think im gonna try and order one of these in 3 weeks when i get paid again. Luckily i have all my "Needed" guns bought and can concentrate on accessories for a bit.

Try and get some Lapua bulk packs. Those are great, and not too expensive.

I may give those a try, But doing it myself would be fun and a time filler.
But i like trying every type of ammo i can get my hands on in my guns to make sure they run like garbage disposals.

But its dis-heartening to pick up a new .22lr i just bought and shoot it after shooting my HMR and it looks like i was firing a shotgun at the target.
It shouldn't be that bad once i add bipods and get more time with the guns tho.

Why not just make some sand-bags out of an old pair of jeans & duct tape?

Way cheaper, and probably better for accuracy testing then a bi-pod.

Not a progressive set up but a multi-round device. Try this link:

Ive been reading over at rimfire and have an account, Im just used to posting in this forum.
I wanted a bipod as i normally shoot off benches, Plus i find sand and lead bags just way more heavy stuff to carry too the range. But in all honesty ill give it thought as saving money is always good.
And if i shoot the gun any place other than a range with a bench i doubt im gonna want to lay on the ground to use a bipod.

I've been watching several of those threads with interest and tend to view them as peronal 'tweaking'. If all I had was a 22lr I might be more interested in trying them but since I also have a .17m2 and a .223 I don't personally have a need.
Given that I've gotten back into reloading I can tweak my centerfires to a broader range than commercial ammo gives me. I'd rather spend the scarce free time tweak the setup of my rifles (such as 2 of my 10/22 mods) for best accuracy/reliability.

Cheers
Chris
