I'm fairly new to suppressors and silencers. If you pay the $200 and legally own a suppressor then it's ok to use it on your other guns of the same caliber correct?

A noise suppressor is considered a Title 2 firearm.
That's why they are marked with manufacturer, model # and serial #.

Once you get your tax stamp and suppressor, you can attach it to any firearm that will accept it.

Thread sizes/pitches varies between manufacturers and calibers.
But, generally each caliber has specific threads. Some manufacturers (such as H&K) like to buck the tread and make their own proprietary threads.

What kind of life expectancy can one expect out of a suppressor?

Can't they be rebuilt for a lifetime worth of service?

As said before, a silencer is a firearm as defined by the feds. Obtaining ATF authorization to make or buy one is a routine matter and never denied as long as the forms are filled out correctly.

As long as the silencer is registered, you maintain control of it at all times (you are with it or it is locked up with the only key with you) and do not commit a crime with it, then the ATF does not care what you do with it or what firearm you use it on. Some people buy a 30 caliber silencer and use it on everything from 30 caliber on down. I made my 30 caliber silencers with a bore large enough to use on my 338 caliber rifles also.

There are some restrictions on repairs and replacement of parts though. An unlicensed owner or builder can not make replacement parts (except for wipes), make the bore larger or make repairs that result in a longer tube unless they pay another $200 tax. A licensed class 2 manufacturer can replace internal parts, but not the tube or make the tube longer. The class 2 can replace the entire unit if it is one they originally made.

These restrictions mean that manufactured silencers are made to last, this is why they are expensive. A good silencer will last years and thousands of rounds as long as it is not overheated or mounted out of alignment with the bore. Baffle strikes can blow the silencer to pieces at worst, or merely cause inaccuracy at best.

Silencers made with rubber wipes will last 50 rounds or less. But wipes can be replaced as long as the originals are destroyed first. I do not know of anyone who still makes silencers with wipes.

Good sites for info on silencers is http://www.subguns.com and http://www.silencertalk.com . You can find links to manufacturers at http://www.silencertests.com/links.htm .

Can you be more specific on the life expectancy of silencers?

The class 2 can replace the entire unit if it is one they originally made

Do you have to pay another $200 tax if your silencer's manufacturer replaces your entire unit?

Life expectancy varies with quality - a $200 silencer may not last as long (5,000 rounds) as a $1,200 silencer (50,000 rounds).

As for the tax if the entire unit is replaced, yes, the BATFE has stated that if the tube itself is replaced, the tax needs to be paid again.

PTK,

I thought for example, if GemTech repairs one of their silencers for someone, they could replace it with an all new unit with the same serial number without another tax, but if they worked on another manufacturer's silencer they were limited to parts replacement and not lengthening the tube. Did I get something wrong? Thanks.

Provided they're the same thread size on the other guns in relation to the silencer, right?

What is the common thread(s)??

yes, not sure what the most common is, just depends on what caliber you are talking about. .556 would probably by 1/2 x 28...308 would probably by 5/8 x 24 or may 9/16 x 24.

i dont have any pistol suppressors and have never used any so i have no idea there...

Thanks. I have read that FAQ before. Either it changed in the last year or I did not remember what it said. Nuts.

Sigh, i guess that answers most of my questions.

How long does a good quality/reputable 9mm suppressor expect to live (in rounds)??

Ranb - the FAQ changed.

How long does a 9mm, quality and reputable suppressor expect to live (in rounds)??

It depends what you consider quality. Materials matter, but generally, it'll outlive most handguns. Expect easily 50,000 rounds from a good silencer for 9x19, though in that time you may need to replace the booster spring (easy to do, cheap to boot)

Big ol' "IT DEPENDS"! Depending on ammo, cleaning regiment, materials, etc., a .22lr silencer can last many tens of thousands of rounds past a centerfire silencer - much less erosion, but you do have to worry about lead deposits.
