I bought a new Mk 4/Series 70 for $234.

Then I sent it to Jim Clark in Keithville, LA. He machined it and installed Smith and Wesson adjustable sights, tightened the slide for target accuracy, and did a trigger job for $112.

Then it went to Trapper Guns in Michigan. Trapper ported the ejection port, put an ambi Swenson safety on, beveled the mag well, throated barrel, hooked the trigger guard, jeweled hammer and trigger, finished it in satin nickel and engraved my name. This cost $178.

The only other work I did was to have a solid bushing (instead of the collet bushing) installed.

I've got $524 in the gun, and it's only had about 2000 rounds through it.

All this took place in 1978.

Amazing how things change.

That $524 was in 1978. In today's dollars you actually spent $1704.

In other words; accounting for inflation, what cost $524 in 1978 would cost $1704 today.

I'll bet the work has increased by 2 fold as I would think all that work would cost at least $2000.00 now not including the cost of the pistol.

Not to mention the fact that famed pistolero Jim Clark passed away. I'm sure Clark Guns is still doing quality work, but still.....

I traded into a fairly nice 1971 Series 70 last year, approximate trade value between $400-$500.
I picked it up from the gunsmith last week, his bill was $1080, NOT including the MSH, grip safety, thumb safety, and trigger I obtained myself elsewhere. Several other parts were replaced, including sights. Reblued. New Hogue grips to replace the Series 70 dirty ooglies on it were another $54.

Get yourself set up now, in another 10+ years even if we can still buy 'em, prices will continue to rise.

Im glad I can go out and buy a 1911 now that already has all of that done to it except for the engraving.

harmonic,

I will send you $525.00 right away, which gives you a profit. Please forward your mailing address :neener:

I bought a NIB Benelli B76 in 1978 for $176.00. A NIB, B76 sold on GB last week for $1,275.00. Man how things change. A friend of mine back around 1980 was buying as much gold as he could afford, I thought he was nuts paying $90.00 an ounce . . . . . . .

Ok, sorry my man, not too impressive figures.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics Inflation Calculator

-That $234 (in 1978 dollars) is worth $782 in 2010 dollars.

-According to Buds Gunshop you can buy a new Colt Series 70 for $843. Thats a difference of $61.

- The $524 labor charge equates to $1752 in 2010 dollars.

Utilizing data from the US Census Bureau:

-That whole package in 1978 dollars cost you $758
-Median household income for 1978= $15064
-Percentage of household income= (758/15064)*(100)= 5.0%

-That whole package in in 2010 dollars would cost you $2595
-Median household income for 2008= $52,029
-Percentage of household income= (25345/52029)*(100)= 4.9%

Have things really changed all that much???

*these calculations are rough, but then again, this is an internet gun forum*

More important than that is the barrell to bushing fit.
