I'm at the range the other day after work just doing the thing w/ my bro-in-law...Shots going off all around as usual when all of a sudden there's a bit of commotion a couple of lanes down from us...Some young lady shot herself in her left leg after taking a hot spent cartridge down the front of her shirt...She was there with her husband...Shot herself with a 9mm...I felt really bad for her as she was pretty hysterical and actually fainted a couple of times by the time the para medics and cops got there...Hopefully,I'll bet that was a lesson well learned...

Sounds like she wasn't too experianced, Finger off the trigger! This could serve as a good lesson. Hope she is alright, any idea about how she shot herself?

Mine learned the hard way that tanks tops, cleavage and the range don't mix.
Seriously. Keep those things in check when operating firearms. There's a time and place.

It is very difficult to keep one's mind on one's business when doing the hot brass dance. :uhoh: I did it once when a case fell between my glasses and cheekbone, and just barely had the presence of mind to keep the gun under control, keeping it pointed away from myself with one hand while peeling the glasses off my face with the other. With a modern handgun that is "drop safe" it might be better to just drop it altogether.

We were told she was trying to slap the shell out from under her T-shirt by hitting herself with her gun hand with the gun still in her hand and it went off...I've taken a spent shell down the shirt a time or two but when it does happen I learned to put the gun down immediately before I get the shell out... We really didn't see it happen...just the aftermath...

You haven't lived until you've somehow managed to get a hot peice of 5.56 brass stuck between you eyelid and the inside of your eye protection.

I hope the lady doesn't have any lasting damage. Hope she continues shooting too.

Buddy, if thats what it takes to live, I'll pass.

I got a piece of 5.56 between my neck and IBA once. That was quite enough for me.

Sounds like one of those deals. What am I missing here? What lesson is there to be learned? I'm not trying to be a wise guy here, but I don't see it.

Gotta love that collar that "tactical velcros" down.
By the by, was this indoors or an outdoor range? I wonder whether the guy is ever allowed to own a gun again. Household-6 might put some new legislature in effect after this.

I hope she is okay. Inexperienced or experienced. I don't like anyone to get hurt, but certain guidelines have to be followed. When I ride my whip, I wear the proper motorcycle attire, you know.
This is why I shoot revolvers. They are accurate, fun, powerful, and the brass stays in the gun.
I dislike it when a person next to me is ejecting brass on me at the range. I find it rude actually.

The lesson seems to me that protective gear extends way beyond eyes and ears. Tank tops or clothing with lots of exposed skin has the potential for bad stuff to happen.

The other lesson seems to be to be prepared to react with safety first no matter what. A relatively minor pain from hot brass was upgraded quickly to serious damage, and potentially lethal.

One more thing to run through the "what if this happens to me" mental scenario. This could happen to anyone, female anatomy doesn't really make it more likely I don't think.

Ahhhh, The "Department's" range...........Really doesn't surprise me much. Lots of unsafe practices going on there. That said, I still prefer the informal to the formal environment. Much more fun !

sounds to me like she wasnt supervised properly. someone should have been there next to her or behind her watching. too bad im sure she wont want to fire a gun again for a very long time

what about a .308 getting stuck between your shorts and the crack of ur hind end?

i think the worst is the neck of your shirt. i was wearing a hooded sweat shirt shooting my .22 revolver one day and i managed to catch every piece of .45acp brass from the guy next to me. i finally just set my revolver down and sat down

I have had an inexperainced shooter do the same thing except they nearly shot me.

Now I'm a big fan of giving new shooters 1 round per mag until they get some trigger control.

I have gotten hot brass in my cloths, but the difference is I have the presence of mind to put the gun down first, or keep it pointed down range.

i once had a brass case land between my glasses & my eyelid. i was just going to keep shooting but decided to stop & remove it from my eyelid, becuse i thought it might leave a mark. when i took my ccw class our instructer said dont wear any lose clothing on the range for this reason. i dont want to through her husband under the bus but why didn't he see the problem & help her. at least take the gun while she removed the brass case.

If its that serious, she might end up walking with a limp for the rest of her happy life. Stay safe and always be conscious at the gun range.
