Banned SKS help

All guns are capable of shooting AP ammo. Only the ammo is restricted (manufacture/importation, not possession), and even there not for all calibers (though 7.62x39mm AP and steel-core are indeed restricted). The SKS is one of the most common centerfire rifles in America, and is not banned even in places like California and Massachusetts.

If he still has any preban steel core, it's legal to possess and shoot, just not legal to make or import any more for non-LE civilian use.

Well let's see, just about every gun outside of a .22 can shoot armor piercing bullets. So that'd mean just about every gun ever would be banned as well.

Your friends research skills are pretty low. The ban on "assault weapons" EXPIRED 6 years ago.

Tell your friend that his SKS really is banned, and now that you've posted here on the forum, the BATFE knows about it and will track him down through you. Fortunately, I have a Class 2J import and production license, so if he wants to sell it to avoid legal trouble, I will be glad to help. Since they are banned, they don't have much resale value. I'd be willing to do him a favor by taking it off his hands for $25.

For $20 to my paypal account, I will declassify his banned sks with my 922 r license and exempt it from any future bans. Tell him to hurray. My fee is scheduled to go up to $30 on Nov 9.

Nor did the 1994 Feinstein law prohibit new importation or sales, and the bayonet restrictions of didn't apply due to the fixed magazine. The prior Bush/Bennett AWB affected SKS's more, but C&R SKS's were still importable. The 922(r) restrictions (parts count rule) are still in effect, but that just means that if you want to add a detachable magazine, you have to use some other U.S.-made parts along with it.

Be careful how and what you tell him. If you haven't seen it for awhile, there may be other reasons, like financial - he sold it, or legal, that now prevent him from using it.

Plus some people take it wrong when their friends try to "correct" them about something. All that happens here is that it becomes obvious what he said was wrong. Why he said it becomes a reflection on him. You aren't saying he's too stupid to know better, but then again, aren't you? It's that kind of thing.

Maybe the better thing is to take him shopping as the "expert" so you can buy an SKS, too. Then he'll hear it from the seller - it's legal - and see ammo he can use. All without directly confronting him about it at all. Some people never "research" anything, they just rely on word of mouth.
