Norinco SKS Paratrooper

Awhile ago my Brother and I were talking and he said he had an SKS that he had bought and never shot. I said I would buy it if h wanted to get rid of it.

Today, at a cookout at my Parents house, my brother shows up with a Norinco SKS "Paratrooper" or at least I think it is a Paratrooper.

It had a few rusty spots on the top of the bolt, but they will polish out I believe.

I asked what he wanted for it and he said $200. I told him that was a bargain. He shrugged and said he had given $99 for it a long time ago.









So, is this a Paratrooper model? It has the scope rail?

Either way, if it shoots well, I'll be happy with it.

Yea, that's a Para. $200 is a good deal for it.

I'm not sure if the scope rail is original. My Para doesn't have one, but you never know with the Chinese. They made a lot of variations of the SKS.

Does the serial number on the stock match the SN of the rifle? I've never seen a Para with a side swivel or an SN on the stock. (the Paratroopers are not a real military variant, they made the name up to make them sound sexy)

I dressed mine up with a folding stock and some other useless crap. It's my only concession to tacticool, but it still ain't got no stupid rails on it. I gave 115 for mine around 1990. I got a chicom 20 found fixed mag, issue mag with a commie star stamped in it that's kinda cool.

That's a good price now days.

No that is not a "paratrooper" as most mistaken believe all short barreled norinco's are. It is in fact a "cowboy companion" carbine the dead giveaway is the scope dovetail and NO bayonet lug. I'm not even sure real Paratrooper SKS'es mate to the uS

Nice SKS!, with that style rail, I'm pretty sure you have what Navy Arms (at least their version) called a "Cowboy's Companion".

I have the same rifle only mine still has the bayo lug but the stock slot for it is filled in, and of course the scope rail is there making a Cowboy Companion

Krochus: I've never hunted and it was interesting to see what that much-maligned Commie rife/round is capable of, not that there was any doubt in S.E. Asia years ago (or now). That must have been some very nice planning for the shot. Saw a color photo of a very dead Texas feral pig's wound, which required just one jhp round from an SKS. It died very quickly and went to meet its 25 virgin sows in swine paradise (if you correctly see my subtle irony).

Were only some so-called Paratroopers built to operate with AK magazines, i.e. the S or D models, or are these only used in the regular (Nor.) SKS?

Why thank you.. I've long said that less than flat shootin rounds have lots of untapped potential if the shooter simply bothers to practice and learn the trajectory. I chuckle at the 30-30 only good for 150yds posts.

Man, the Chinese sure as hell milked that rifle for all they could. They sure made good SKS rifles.

I had one sold as a Paratrooper, short barrel, no bayonet lug, no scope rail. Sold it many years ago, good rifle.

I remembered reading a post about all the different variations, but did not remember Cowboy Companion.

And yes, the number on the stock is the same number on the trigger guard and magazine.

I plan on going to the range Saturday to see how it shoots. I'll post the results.

Why would you say that? Mine has a bayo mount (and the short bayo). I've seen plenty like this. You do realize that these were a commercial variant only (Despite what Navy Arms claimed). These sold were sold under a few names with slight variations.

There were earlier pre-ban SKS with the 20" barrel and AK mags. These had bayonets attached. Later, post '89 there were the shorter SKS with no bayonettes. There may have also been post-bans with 20" barrels as well, I don't know.

Mine is a post-ban with the 16" barrel. The Bayonette lug is there, but was never machined. Note the shorter gas tube also. Like the Paras, the Chinese used a few different names for these (SKS-D, SKS-M, SKS Sporter, etc). I've never seen one advertised as a Para in the old ads or boxes though.

Why would you say that?

For the same reason you called a 16" SKS with no bayo lug and a scope mount a "Paratrooper" in post 2, you/I just didn't know

Like I said earlier mine actually has the lug for the bayo but the relief in the stock for it is filled and mine has the scope mount on the LH side of the reciever, making mine a Cowboy Companion

The flash hider was free. Friend gave it to me. This is a project in how much useless tacticool crap you can pile on an SKS. But, it's a fun range shooter.
