Endura Question

Recently I have aquired a new FRN Endura 4. I really like the knife, but do have a question.

This knife locks up pretty good, there is no blade wobble or vertical movement at all. However, I have found that if I apply pressure on the cutting edge, the blade will move back slightly (less than 1/16th of an inch) and make a slight "click" sound. Is this normal?

I'm good with it if that's the case, just wanted to hear from other Endura owners.

Well the good news is that I cannot get this lock to fail. That's nice.

After further inspection I have noticed that it is NOT the blade that is clicking. When I apply pressure against the cutting edge the blade moves backwards ever so slightly. As the blade moves it causes the lock release button on the handle of the knife to dip into the handle very slightly. Almost cannot see it moving. When the lockback button moves, it makes a clicking sound.

Does anyone else's do this or does their blade have any rearward motion when pressure is applied?

I contacted Spyderco. Very nice folks to deal with by the way. They were prompt and courteous.

Here's what I have learned. Slight vertical blade play is normal with FRN handled knives and does not in any way interfere or detract from the integrity of the knife. Excessive play is a problem. After explaining the issue, they told me that the ammount of play that is in my knife seemed to be within specs, but that the clicking sound on the release button was unusual.

I think it's probably fine, but I am going to send it on in just so they can check the clicking in the lock. If they look it over and send it back, I'll be fine with it. I just want to make sure that it's "all good".

It's possible that the lighter knives are more prone to this, but I can't say based on only two samples.

Yeah, that is what CS at Spyderco said. That some vertical play was okay. I am cool with that if that is the way it's supposed to be. The clicking is really the only thing at this point that concerns me.

I have two other Spydercos. A Centofante 3 and Delica stainless. The stainless Delica is a vault! No movement at all. The FRN Centofante has extremely slight, borderline unnoticable vertical movement, and that is if you are really bearing down on it. But, it does not click.

I am ok with some play, but I think the Endura is going to take a trip up to Golden just to be on the safe side. I have other knives to tote in the mean time, and $5 for peace of mind is a small price. (Don't want this thing chopping my fingers off because of a defect)

On a positive note. The Endura is a pretty cool knife. Light, huge blade, melts in your pocket like it aint even there, and plenty sharp. Once it is given the all clear or replaced, I can see this one getting plenty of carry time.
