I purchased an endura 4 from knifecenter about 3 weeks ago and have kept it in my pocket for that time. It has mainly been used on food prep, cutting string and opening letters and I used it a couple of times to strip the protective coating off of electrical wires. Note to self: buy a set of Kleins. This is scary sharp and a slip almost left people calling me nubby. Let me start by saying that my only other spyderco is an atlantic salt and I do love it. That is what made me want the endura 4. It is light weight, cuts food like a chef knife no problems on utility just on the recess where it locks up at is so prone to dust collection I often times had to blow it out before using because I never heard the click and it did not lock due to pocket lint. Like I said the knife has performed solidly I just question it as an EDC now because if I were to have to use it in a SD situation I am afraid that will be the time that dust will be there and it won't lock and now the perp won't have to hurt me I would have already cut my own fingers off for him. Anybody else experience this problem with the Endura 4 or is it I just need more money in my pocket and less lint.

I have had mine for the same amount of time and have not had any problem like you describe. I carry it rfp daily.
I would suggest before you dress, turn out the pocket and remove all lint build up. this might help as the E4 is a tip up carry and the 5 inch closed lenth might be rubbing that stuff up into the recess.
If you need an excuse to buy another knife look at the Native 3 and Tenacious, both are fantastic for an EDC.
On the matter of using a knive for SD, there have been some really good threads recently that you should search that may give you insight as to why a blade is not a first line defense weapon

Let me first say thanks for our response. I normally carry but there are times when I don't. I usually have the Taurus pt 145 in the truck and a minimag revolver .22mag in my pocket or closeby in my tool bag, but I often work in places were firearms are strictly prohibited so then I utilize other weapons like tools from my bag hammer, screwdrivers. I have read those threads and I agree that it is not the best for self defense but in a pinch or if it is all you have. Then I want to be sure of it.For instance while not the best steel I feel totally confident in my crkt m16-13m and my benchmade vex. I will give the remove lint thing before putting the knife in my pocket a try (don't know why haven't thought of it myself probably to simple) Maybe its just that I am not used to lockbacks and the little extra care. Most of my folders are liner locks or frame locks. The only lockbacks I have are the spydercos and like I said I don't carry the atlantic salt much unless I know that I am going to be around salt water which is not often. Like someone else said though your brain is the best weapon and tactics are more likely to save your life than equipment. remember when it comes to trouble if you can avoid, evade, run and when cornered remember Duncan Mcleod "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE".

Snow,
Don't worry too much about the lint build up, UNLESS it is a VERY excessive amount. The locks have a space left in the bottom just for this.

The lock back type knives when done right are some of the strongest locks and Spyderco has it down pat!

The Endura 4's are some of the best EDC blades out there for the money in my opinion.

snow,

Has the knife not locked or just not given the reassuring "CLICK"? I ask because friends and I have carried back lock Spydercos and not had the problem of not locking.

I've had an occasional problem with pocket lint preventing my Delica 4 from locking correctly. I even had this problem with a Sebenza once. My pockets probably have an inordinate amount of lint in them. Most of the time, it's not a problem.

I got my Delica 4 when they first came out and have carried is almost daily since. It's been a great knife. I'm not a Spyderco fan-boy, but they do make a decent knife for the money. It's a nice price point where dropping it on the garage floor doesn't give me heart palpitations.

Yeah, especially the ones you've full-flat ground! My FFG ZDP E4 you ground up is still tickin'.

As far as lint, all that is is necessary is to clean it out every-other month. I carry one or more lockback Spydies every day and have never had a problem.

Very true, but many people (myself included) much prefer tip-up. It's kinda funny though, because the first few times I drew a tip-up folder, I thought the clip was on the wrong way.

Well I don't have to worry about the Endura anymore I lost yesterday evening coming back from my stand. Maybe I will find it someday. Hey it gives me an excuse to by another knife. I will most likely get another one or a RAT 3 instead. Not sure maybe I'll just get both and call it a day.
