I know, I know...
But, here's the deal. My friend is not a gun guy, but has inherited an old Ruger Mark (III I think?) .22 pistol. We've gone to the range, and he's comfotable with it & is going to keep it in the house for defense.

So, in your opinions, what would be the best man-stopper .22LR (oxymoron?) round he can buy?

Full metal jacket, or hardcast?

Thanks for your input!

Any high velocity solid bullet. In a .22 you are looking for penetration and not expansion.
With those fast Stinger type rounds, while they may expand, they may not penetrate far enough to reach the vital organs. So with a .22, I'd favor a solid bullet over a hollowpoint

HANK 327 has it correct.

Elmer Keith was the one that pointed me in the correct direction as to ammo for 'mouse guns'.

If your shooting dangerous game [ man ] then you need to put deep holes in them IF your shooting smaller caliber.

that was his point and I saw it and obey when I carry a mouse gun [ only as BUG ].

My vote is the biggest and heaviest .22 RF you can find.

If all I had was a .22 for self defense, then I would use CCI Mini-Mags for the simple reason that I've never had one misfire. They have very reliable primers, and to me that's a huge consideration when considering a rimfire for defense. That's why many people use a revolver if they are using a .22.

If this pistol is for home defense, then your friend might consider buying a used 12 Gauge pump shotgun. ;)

I'd suggest to him that he buy a couple of boxes of as many different brands of .22 high velocity solids as he can find and take them to the range and figure out which brand works best in his pistol.

CCI Velocitors or Aguila Interceptors would be my choice as long as they feed reliably in the Ruger.

+1 on what geologist said.
i tried several types of amo in an old Llama and a pocket Beretta. Stingers worked great in both pistols.

There is no full metal jacket ammo available for 22LR. There is no hardcast ammo available for 22LR. There is no magic ammo that is going to turn a 22LR from a pistol into a good self defense round.

In the age of high powered, high caliber, bigger is better attitude, you will be surprised how deadly the miniscule 22LR can be. The Massad uses the 22LR. The other day, I was watching Munich, a Steven Spielbereg movie of how the Israeils revenged the terroristic murder of their Iraeils Olympians by the PLO. With the first assasination, 2 Israeils assasinated one the badguys with simple 22LRs semiautos.

It isn't about how deadly the round is. It is about the ability to stop the attack right then and there. I don't care if the round I am using kills an attacker. I only care that it stops the attack.

A .22 can not reliably do that unless placed very specifically.

In addition you need to worry about the inherent unreliability of the round...

I'm actually convinced that even a burst from a 7.62x51 machine gun couldn't totally be counted on to stop every attack immediately. I bet a statistical analysis would reveal it to be a very effective stopper, but not 100%.
If forced to depend on a .22 for SD, I'd also pick the most reliable and fastest solid bullet I could get my hands on. I've seen HV .22 JHP ammunition fail to penetrate the shoulder of a small animal and repeatedly bounce off car side windows without breaking. I've seen solids totally penetrate the passenger compartment of an old car and come out the other door. I use solids for any hunting and I'd use them for SD.

CCI Velocitors. Stingers are much too frangible.

And don't discount a faceful of Velocitors for self defense. Much better than a sharp stick or harsh words.
CCI Velocitors or Aguila Interceptors would be my choice as long as they feed reliably in the Ruger.
The problem with these loads is you only gain about 80FPS in a pistol along with a noticable increce in muzzle blast and flash.
Velocitors will not expand (ever) when shot from a normal length pistol barrel.
The CCI SGB is the same as the MINI-MAG solid, but has a fairly large, flat meplat for more tissue damage and still maintains more penetrating than a hollow point.

If SGB's weren't available however, I would use Interceptors, and third choice would be Velocitors.

I'd either go with the CCI Minimag solid points, or if they feed ok in your friends gun, the Aguila Sub Sonic Sniper. At 60 grains, that's about the heaviest .22LR you're gonna find, BUT only by a small quantity to try first, as they're not accurate in every gun, as the heavier bullet does better with a faster twist than a lotta stock .22s have in their barrel.

I agree with everyone that while the CCI Stinger looks better on paper, out of a pistol, you're not gonna see that much improvement.

And keep working on him to move up to at least a .32ACP. :)

OK, true enough. The problem is that there are few rounds where the probability of an immediate stop is LOWER than a 22LR.

.22 isn't the best, but the OP knows that already....

I sure as hell ain't gonna stand in front of his buddy and let him shoot me with it.....

Like already stated..... Use a solid bullet, not that Id volunteer to be shot with the hollowpoints either.....

Side note: I've got a little Walther P22 w/laser.... I can empty 10 rounds into a grapefruit sized target pretty quick...... It's not my first choice for HD, but I bet it'd do the job just fine
