what is, in your experience, the CLEANEST 22lr ammo you have shot? most other ammo, it is really not that big of a deal, at least to me, as the one that i shoot the most without a thourogh cleaning is my 22's. the rest get cleaned after 20-50 rounds. but the poor old 22's get 200-500 rounds through them prior to cleaning. i know it is like apples to tomatoe's the 22 to say a 300 win mag, but still i am curious.

Cleanest? Probably anything with a copper jacket, such as the bulk federal stuff. The exposed-lead ones like the bulk Remington stuff seem to get powdered lead everywhere.

That being said, rimfires really do not need as much cleaning as other firearms do. Some will even be more accurate when they're dirty. So long as the action is clean enough to work properly and the metal is protected from rust, they're usually good to go.

You don't need to clean the barrel of a 22 rimfire (excluding WMR) very often. I have some that the barrel has not been cleaned in 10 years. They shoot better this way.

I clean around the action and breech end of the barrel when I see a buildup. That's it.

Don't worry about dirty 22 ammo.

I also favor the copper washed bullets for "clean", but most higher quality 22 ammo is not copper washed. Don't worry about it! Clean your 300 win mag.

^Agreed.

Just hit the action with some Gun Scrubber, followed by some Rem Oil.

The cleanest shooting .22 lrs that I've ever encountered have always been the mid to higher end match grade stuff, particularly the imported stuff.

I've found SK and RWS to be very clean.......As stated above I rarely clean the barrel on my .22 rimfires. Just keep the action and chamber clean and your gun will be happy.

well, i am not inclined to purchase expensive plinking ammo, but thanks for the input. i, one of these days, am going to try a box of the special competition target ammo, just to see if it will make much of a difference in my gun. of course it will be from sand bags, so it will take me out of the equasion as much as possible. but even if it does improve the groups, i wont be buying a lot of it.

The cleanest ammo; I lean toward the Federal red or blue box stuff. CCI Standard velocity or Winchester Target are also as good but a little more expensive. I can say that the dirtiest .22 ammo that I have shot would be the Remington Thunderbolt. When it comes to cleaning I clean my model 17 and 617 More than any other gun.. I clean them while shooting them at the range. After about 100 rounds they loose all sense of accuracy. When clean you can shoot around a bull @ 30 feet all day. Start to push your round count to close to 100 and you are lucky to be on a paper plate at the same distance.. (Just my experience)

wow, you MUST have a finicky rifle! mine seldome gets less than 200 rounds per visit, and do not notice any large decrease in accuracy. and i shoot way over 30 feet, usually in the 50 yard range. sometimes, i shoot @ 100 yards, just to help keep my hunting skills up. also, if practical, (when trying to keep my hunting skills sharp) i try to shoot sitting without a rest. there is no point in practicing from a bench as i have not found a bench to shoot from out in the woods yet.

CCI mini mags are the cleanest and most reliable I've used. Course I have a Sig mosquito and nothing else feeds reliably out of it.:banghead: Love the feel of the gun, but I shoulda got the Ruger.
