What kind of gun did Jed Clampett use to make his oil strike? I'd thought that it was a muzzle-loader but on YouTube it looks like a lever gun. Maybe something like a Remington 1873 musket.

Anybody know for sure?

Not a lever gun; perhaps the brass "grip" furniture fooled you. I can't tell from any of the low quality YouTube shots if it's a caplock or a flint, but it's one or the other. Most likely just some prop house muzzleloader.

<edit> Found a higher resolution clip, and I'd say that's a caplock. Pretty big bore, too. And yes, I'm embarrassed that I don't have anything better to do. That damned song is going to be in my head for days.

I was looking at a different intro. The later, color intro is what I was looking at.

Thanks, GCBurner. I'm pretty sure (now) that the two intros use different guns. That was probably the source of my confusion.

By the way, there was yet another intro that didn't include Jed and his gun. Granny toted one, though.

I turned my zoom up to 400% and the gun looks like an 1870 or 1873 Springfield Trapdoor with the sights removed and restocked to look like a caplock smoothbore.

I know Uncle Jed owns a Winchester lever action. He, Jethro and Mr. Drysdale go skeet shooting in one episode. Mr. Clampett and Mr. Bodine break the clay pegeons with their rifles. Then I think Uncle Jed picks flies off a fence a good distance away.

So I wonder how he missed "shootin' for some food" and hit the bublin' crude.

Pass through. It's all about sectional density.

They did not shoot flies on A fence post,Because that would not be sportin. They shot them as they was commin in fer A landin!

And Jed wouldn't kill 'em. Just keep 'em from ever reproducing. ;)
