Anyone else watch Hickok45 on youtube shooting various types of .410 with a 2.5" Taurus Judge. Pretty interesting results, good video by John.

Kind of like the Winchester PDX1 with 12 bb's and 3(?) 00 buckshot - or something like that. If I had a gang of thungs coming at me I wouldn't be opposed to this at close range ~ 7 yds.

What ye think? Maybe a truck gun? Nightstand? Just for fun? Dunno.

Wow, 28 views, and no responses

If anything I expected a severe flogging for mentioning the TJ :) Oh well.

Nice video. They sure are popular.
I bought one. Shot it a few times. then sold it for what I had given. It was the 3 inch version. Just a little too bulky for me.

Reserving my judgment until I try mine out. I pick it up Tuesday. I am not expecting it to make me feel all warm and fuzzy like my S&W wheel guns but I am pretty sure it will be a fun toy and nice snake gun.

Well, it's pretty much what people have been saying it is--kind of chunky for a 5-round .45 Colt, and it shoots .410 shotshells with a rather wide spread (probably due to the rifling) except for shells designed specifically for it. It's effective, no doubt, and obviously nobody would want to be hit even by birdshot, but it's difficult to evaluate it comparatively as a defensive weapon as extremely short-barreled .410 shothandguns haven't had a long, illustrious history. ;)

I wonder about the real-world penetration capabilities of low-sectional-density shot when fired at relatively low velocities, and the fact that long barrels (usually 18" or longer) are used to achieve the published numbers even on ammo that is specifically designed for the Judge neither encourages realistic expectation among its fans nor discourages the inevitable backlash and reflexive eye-rolling among its detractors. In a nutshell, the jury is still out on the Judge. :)

The "buckshot" are flattened in order to provide space for the BBs, which as the video confirms reduces their penetration even further, as I had predicted in a previous thread:

The PDX1 load patterns well but definitely makes compromises.

In my opinion, along with .45 Colt hollow-points the best thing that the Judge has going for it is currently Federal's Judge-specific #000 buckshot load (also demonstrated by Hickok45). The question is whether the latter is a superior performer, thereby validating the concept of this revolver, and I think it depends chiefly on whether it can achieve adequate penetration in any given scenario--four projectiles hitting at once is no joke, but penetration is the main key to effectiveness.

Good vid. I don't own a judge but my uncle does. Fun to put different ammo in and having a mystery each time you pull the trigger. I'd never use it for anything else besides pleasure shooting.

With shotgun shells it just doesn't have enough range and precision for me. With .45 colt it's nice, but I could have a smaller revolver that shoots .45 colt. It would make for a nice snake gun.

My grandfather has one (his under-the-matress-gun) and I'm a fan of it. It has pretty accurate carbon fiber sights that are great for every-day shooting. It seems the .410 is convinient for 2 legged home intruders and no legged aggressive serpents, however, I've never used it on either one.

Great video!

That pretty much says it all. I ended up selling my Judge after the novelty wore off. Bird shot spreads too quickly to do any good on anything but a snake that is less than 5 feet away. To make matters worse, it isn't a nice evenly spaced spread of shot, due to the rifling the shot pattern is more of a "doughnut" with a large space in the middle where very few pellets hit. Ballistic tests show very limited penetration even with buckshot and .410 slugs are usually a mere 90-100 grain bullets and the short barrel really limits velocity. The .45 colt is the most effective defensive round you can shoot out of this gun, but that goes back to the fact that you would have better accuracy, velocity and performance in a smaller/lighter package if you got a nice single action revolver instead of the Judge. Now the new "trail carbine" that is based on the judge frame would probably be much more useful with it's long barrel and shoulder stock.

I picked mine up today; I don't intend on using it for a HD gun and who knows if I'll keep it but it is an unusual gun and every video I have seen says it's fun to shoot so it will probably hang around for a while.

A pic of my new Magnum judge...

I think its cool. I don't see me owning one, but I think its great for those that want one. I find the argument of "its useless" or it "serves no purpose" to be silly. I own lots of guns that only serve the purpose of making me grin. If that gun is fun to shoot and makes you grin, then it serves its purpose and its a great gun.

I bought one new when it was still a tracker 45/410 with a 6 inch barrel for 200. They were selling out of them because they werent doing very well. Its a great snake gun and it fires 45 colt very accurately. I shot a fox squirrel at 10 yards or so with no4 shot and he ran up the tree and died in his hole. I only found a couple shot marks in the 4 foot tree so the pattern is huge.
